Sekiro: No Defeat, the anime feature adaptation of FromSoftware's Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, will open in Japanese cinemas on Sept 4, 2026, for a limited three-week theatrical run. The announcement, made May 8, 2026, via the production's official X account, also confirmed a new visual for the theatrical release.

The movie will also compete at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in June. However, an international theatrical release has not been confirmed. After its Japanese theatrical run, Sekiro: No Defeat will stream exclusively on Crunchyroll worldwide, excluding Belarus, Russia, China, Korea, and Japan.

At Annecy, Sekiro will screen its Midnight Specials category, a program the festival reserves for experimental and high-octane animations. The announcement positions Sekiro: No Defeat within a slate of theatrical-first anime projects as Japanese studios increasingly prioritize event-style releases for established properties, observed in the case of Demon Slayer movies and Nintendo’s Super Mario movie adaptations.

Sekiro: No Defeat Anime: A Highly Acclaimed Plot and an Established Crew

Sekiro: No Defeat film centers on a warrior-driven conflict narrative that follows the protagonist, Sekiro. The source material, Shadows Die Twice, carries considerable critical and commercial significance.

Shadows Die Twice won Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2019, outpacing titles such as Resident Evil 2, Control, and Death Stranding. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice earned Metacritic’s “universal acclaim” designation with 90 Metascore, and has sold over 10M units worldwide as of September 2023.

The movie’s director, Kenichi Kutsuna, whose previous works include storyboard work on Magical Destroyers and The Fire Hunter's opening animations, leads the production. Sekiro: No Defeat’s character design is handled by Takahiro Kishida, known for Durarara!! and JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind.

Katsuna previously discussed the production stakes of adapting a highly acclaimed game in a Variety interview. “This anime is going to put this under the microscope,” he stated while discussing the potential audience and production scale.

Japanese voice actors from the original game’s main characters are also reprising their roles in the movie. Daisuke Namikawa is again voicing Sekiro, alongside Miyuki Satō as Kuro, Kenjirō Tsuda as Genichiro Ashina, and Shizuka Itō as Emma, among others.

The Sekiro: No Defeat anime movie arrives during an accelerating game-to-anime pipeline, with acclaimed titles like Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, Arcane, Persona 4: The Animation, and NiNoKuni. For now, Sekiro: No Defeat joins 2026’s dense anime lineup, betting on theatrical release and event-driven marketing as studios compete for both domestic revenue and international licensing attention.
