Highlights

  • Yoshihiro Togashi revealed that inking for chapter 430 of the Hunter x Hunter manga is complete, signaling publication momentum.
  • Fans are now waiting on Shueisha to confirm release dates for chapters 420 onward in Weekly Shonen Jump.
  • With over 80M copies sold, Hunter x Hunter remains among the top manga franchises.

Hunter x Hunter creator Yoshihiro Togashi posted an update on X (formerly Twitter) on April 8, signaling renewed progress on his long-running Hunter x Hunter manga after its latest hiatus. Togashi confirmed that character inking for chapter 430 is complete and directed readers to await the Jump editorial department's announcement regarding publication dates for chapters 420 onward.

The Hunter x Hunter manga update marks one of the clearest production milestones Togashi has shared in months. The series last ran in Weekly Shonen Jump from Oct 7 to Dec 9, 2024, before entering another hiatus.

Togashi's post also included a crossover illustration of the Hunter x Hunter character, Kurapika, alongside Artemis, a figure from Sailor Moon. He framed the illustration as a tribute to his wife, Sailor Moon creator Naoko Takeuchi, crediting her for encouraging him to keep going with the manga.

Hunter x Hunter Manga: A Commercial Property Sustained by Scarcity

Hunter x Hunter has sold over 80M copies, making it one of the highest-selling manga series of all time. However, the serialization is defined more by interruption than continuity.

Togashi has reportedly missed 875 of 1,277 issues of Weekly Shonen Jump, a 68.5% absence rate, since its 1998 debut. The longest single hiatus stretched nearly four years, from 2019 to October 2022, when Togashi revealed that health problems had prevented him from sitting for two years, forcing him to draw Hunter x Hunter manga panels while lying down.

As of September 2024, 38 collected volumes of Hunter x Hunter have been released, covering 400 chapters. After the publication of chapter 401 in 2024, Togashi has been publishing the concurrent chapters in batches of ten. However, despite being a highly popular anime franchise, those chapters are not collected in a volume.

Despite the setbacks, the Hunter x Hunter franchise has expanded into anime series, films, and games, often considered one of the defining anime properties in the early 2000’s. The English manga version is available on VIZ, while the animated series is available across streaming platforms, including Crunchyroll.
