That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime has returned for season 4 alongside several other isekai series releases of the season, including Ascendance of a Bookworm, Re: Zero season 4, Welcome to Demon School, and more. But Rimuru’s story definitely stands apart with its dedication to the slice-of-life tropes. The new Season 4 continues to focus on Rimuru's journey toward building a monster-human alliance, against all obstacles, including the growing hatred for him from the Rozzo family. His biggest foes are Granville Rozzo and his granddaughter, Maribel Rozzo, who have been waiting to take him down to ensure human dominance over other species.

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Recap: What happened so far

Rimuru started off his journey in the central world as a slime without any vision and has grown up to be one of the most powerful monsters to exist in just three seasons. From building a village of goblins to growing it to a massive empire open for all, Rimuru didn’t stop after making a few enemies, as he always had more allies to back him up, aka dragons, demon lords, kings, and more.

The previous season ended on a high note with demon-level fights, political chaos, and tactical betrayal taking the forefront. Hinata Sakaguchi’s hatred towards Rimuru turned out to be because of the Rozzo family, who manipulated the information around the central world through the church. Rimuru has always been wary of them, and being one step ahead paid off with more allies by the end of the season. Hinata finally finds out Rimuru is not responsible for the death of their teacher, Shizu, and begins to work with him.

On the other hand, season 3 had also introduced another otherworlder, Masayuki, who has ‘The Chosen One’ power. Masayuki isn’t a fan of being lauded as the hero and decides to become Rimuru’s subordinate after finding out that the Slime is also from the same Earth as him.

What to expect in season 4 of That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime?

Despite Rimuru earning the status of a Demon Lord in the previous season, the new cour of the anime begins with Tempest focusing on running their own attraction event, a new dungeon. In the previous season, Rimuru and his team focused on finding the right monsters, talents, and building the materials for the massive labyrinth, but the new seasons will see them encounter more trouble with how to keep it running. Opening a dungeon to the rest of the world also means people coming in from all around, exposure to powerful people, and more enemies, as if Rimuru didn’t have enough of them already.

His declared reward for anyone clearing the dungeon (gets to challenge Rimuru) also turns it into a bigger deal across the world. It does give Tempest a chance to put itself on the map, but the Rozzo family aren’t the kind of villains who would sit around and let it happen. The early episode of the season does hint at tension among the locals in Tempest as outsiders keep belittling them for just being monsters.

The show does reintroduce some of the essential characters once again, revealing where each one of them is and what their plan seems to be for the time being. Hinnata has been teaching kids in Tempest, while Masayuki is clearing the dungeon as the chosen hero of the nation. Veldora is happy roaming around in his human form while also unleashing his aura in the labyrinth. Ramiris is happy running parts of the dungeon and building traps to slow down the new warriors, but it isn’t as easy as it seems.

Meanwhile, apart from Rozzo’s, That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime also has another ultimate villain. Yuuki Kagurazaka, another character from Earth, hasn’t given up on his idea of ruling the world. Though he does not plan on being any outright antagonist anytime soon, as he does not want to get on Rimuru’s bad side. After his contribution to Hinata’s fight with Rimuru, Yuuki plans on staying low and using Tempest’s newly established trades as a means to grow his own influence.

Rimuru Tempest is set to face villains from Earth and the Central world

While Rimuru isn’t worried about any of that, he is more focused on getting more people to the Tempest Dungeon for the sake of capitalism. The high expense of running a labyrinth also needs to be countered with more people coming to play the game. Masayuki helps incorporate gaming tactics from Earth for the safety of the players, and Rimuru introduces another big reward of 100 gold coins for the one who can conquer the dungeon. But this is just the beginning. Rimuru plans on growing trade across the region, while huge amounts of warriors travel to Tempest. To grow trade, he also convinces the rulers of the adjacent regions to build train routes, in turn growing their own influence across the land.

Not only Rimuru, but Veldora, Hinata, and Ramiris all seem to have fun with the new laybrinath in Tempest, while testing it and running it. They run into trouble when stronger warriors begin to challenge it, but Rimuru always has a plan up his sleeve. The new season has started slowly, but, as previous seasons did, this too will develop towards a more tense situation, as more people and power get involved in Tempest’s plans for a world of monster-human alliance.

The series animation has stayed constant throughout the series, and the early episodes haven’t dipped so far. As the season will introduce more major fights, a high level of action is expected from Eight Bit Studio and director Naokatsu Tsuda. Miho Okasaki as Rimuru keeps the calm among the storm of other characters, just as her character has been throughout the series. With more menacing characters set to be introduced, the voice acting is bound to take a turn, hopefully with more appearances from  Natsuki Hanae as Yuuki Kagurazaka. The anime is currently streaming on Crunchyroll and will follow through on a weekly release schedule.
