James Bond has officially returned to the gaming world, and his latest mission is already a record-breaking success. IO Interactive’s highly anticipated origin story, 007 First Light, has completely blown past the studio's internal forecasts, officially selling 2.7 million copies since its release. However, according to IO Interactive CEO Hakan Abrak, speaking to Gamesindustry.biz, the critically acclaimed stealth-action title has "probably" already crossed the massive 3 million mark worldwide.
Abrak described the sales as a good mile above what the team had estimated. The explosive release kicked off on May 27, 2026, when the game shifted a staggering 1.5 million copies within its first 24 hours alone, officially making it the fastest-selling game in the developer's history and cementing IO Interactive’s status as a powerhouse independent developer following their acclaimed work on the Hitman franchise.
PlayStation Dominates as Revenue Hits $150 Million
This commercial triumph has already translated into a massive financial windfall for the studio, bringing in approximately $150 million USD in estimated revenue driven by the game's premium $70 price point. A closer look at the data shows that PlayStation players are the most eager to step into the iconic tuxedo. Out of the 2.2M verified sell-through copies, a metric that tracks actual purchases by players rather than unsold retail inventory, the PlayStation 5 dominated by accounting for 55% of total sales.
Valve's Steam platform followed in a solid second place with 33%, while Xbox consoles made up the remaining 12%. Despite the spectacular revenue figures, the game has not entirely recouped its financial investment just yet, though the finish line is well in sight. The game's total budget is roughly $200M across seven years of intensive development. However, Abrak pushed back on those numbers, clarifying that the massive figure represents a much broader budget that includes extensive global marketing expenses and future performance-related bonuses.
Abrak noted that while they haven't completely recouped yet due to partnership agreements and licensing royalties, the game is performing far beyond their wildest dreams. By all measures, the studio head confidently stated that First Light is going to be a massive new success for the team.

Critical Acclaim & Massive Player Engagement
It is easy to see why the game is selling so rapidly when looking at the glowing critical reception. 007 First Light currently boasts a highly impressive Metacritic score of 88. Players have been just as enthusiastic as the critics. In the first week alone, the community started over 34M missions. Fans have also fully embraced the game's unique espionage mechanics, deploying the highly touted "bluff" social conditioning feature more than 10M times as they talk their way out of tense situations.
Looking to the future, IO Interactive has outlined a massive content roadmap during Summer Game Fest to keep this growing player base engaged. The developer confirmed that the bulk of the Year One content will be released entirely for free. This includes a brand-new mission set in Aleph featuring the Pirate King Bawma, who is voiced and played by rock legend Lenny Kravitz. Additional updates will introduce fresh Tactical Simulation challenges and a highly requested New Game+ mode to keep veterans on their toes.
The studio isn't stopping there. IO Interactive is targeting a late Summer 2026 release for the Nintendo Switch 2, an expansion that is expected to push sales figures even higher. Furthermore, the firm is having ongoing conversations with Bond license owner Amazon Games about what comes next.
While Abrak stated that the current focus is solely on the live tail of First Light and its first year of content, he does hope that players stick around so that the team can deliver some amazing content in year two as well. Fans can expect the two companies to discuss their future plans and potential new titles in the Bond universe soon.
