Highlights

  • Capcom implements a near-annual release strategy by alternating between full-scale Resident Evil remakes and brand-new mainline sequels like Resident Evil Requiem.
  • The staggering financial success, led by Resident Evil 4 Remake sales, has propelled the franchise past 201M lifetime units globally.
  • This self-sustaining cycle provides crucial funding for new IPs, with Resident Evil: Code Veronica Remake anticipated for a 2027 release.

For survival horror fans, the future looks terrifyingly bright. Capcom has confirmed an ambitious new release strategy designed to put a major Resident Evil game into players' hands on a near-annual basis. Instead of burning out development teams by rushing out brand-new sequels every twelve months, the Japanese publisher is implementing a clever rotation: systematically alternating between full-scale modern remakes of classic titles and brand-new mainline entries.

Series producer Masachika Kawata revealed the roadmap in a recent interview with Game Informer, explaining that this alternating cycle is the key to maintaining a steady, predictable release calendar without ever sacrificing the high standard of quality fans expect.

Building a massive, ground-up mainline title every single year is practically impossible for modern development studios. Kawata admitted that producing a brand-new original game every year would be "quite an undertaking and a difficult task." By mixing in classic revivals, Capcom can smoothly bridge the gap between fresh sequels while keeping the franchise active and engaging.

However, do not mistake these remakes for mere side projects or secondary fallback plans. Kawata stressed that these modernized classics are just as important to the company’s ecosystem as numbered mainline titles. Revisiting beloved older games naturally takes less development time than building a world from scratch. This gives development teams the breathing room to continually challenge themselves, sharpen their technical craftsmanship, and experiment with modern game design before diving into the next massive sequel.

Record Commercial Numbers and Sales Milestones

This ambitious yearly roadmap is heavily sustained by some truly mind-boggling commercial numbers. Simply put, modernized survival horror is an absolute financial powerhouse for Capcom. The momentum was supercharged earlier this year by the release of the ninth mainline installment, Resident Evil Requiem, which has surpassed 6M copies, with even more post-launch content currently on the way.

Meanwhile, market projections from gaming research firm Alinea Analytics report that the 2023 Resident Evil 4 Remake has sold approximately 16.8M copies worldwide across PlayStation, Xbox, and PC platforms. That single title has generated an estimated $560 million USD in gross revenue, making it the current console generation's most commercially successful game remake by a wide margin.

All of these individual milestones feed into Capcom's broader dominance, with official data confirming that Resident Evil is its best-selling franchise of all time, boasting lifetime sales that have now surpassed an incredible 201M units globally.

Beyond pleasing long-time horror fans, this self-sustaining financial cycle of remakes and sequels acts as a vital economic engine for the entire company. Kawata noted that the massive commercial draw of this release rotation provides the crucial resources needed to fund completely new intellectual properties outside the horror universe, such as the sci-fi adventure Pragmata. Resident Evil is now serving a dual purpose of acting as both a blockbuster hit series for gamers and a resource engine for Capcom’s wider lineup.

Following the massive launch of Requiem, the next confirmed classic getting the modernized remake treatment is the highly anticipated Resident Evil – Code: Veronica, which multiple reports confirm is currently slated to launch in 2027. Once Veronica arrives, plenty of other fan favorites are waiting in line.

In a 2023 Capcom survey, players voiced heavy demand for modern remakes of Resident Evil 5, Resident Evil 6, Resident Evil Zero, Resident Evil Outbreak, and even a fresh update to the original Resident Evil. With this near-annual strategy now firmly in motion, fans won't have to wait long to see which nightmare Capcom rebuilds next.
