Highlights

  • Cyberpunk 2077 has surpassed 40M copies sold worldwide.
  • Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty reached 10M sales as Cyberpunk 2 development continues.
  • The milestone marks one of gaming's biggest comeback stories.

Cyberpunk 2077 has sold 40M copies worldwide, CD Projekt announced on July 3, 2026, nearly six years after the RPG's launch on Dec 10, 2020. The figure includes standalone copies and those sold through the Ultimate Edition bundle. The milestone represents an increase of 5M copies since the game reached 35M sales in November 2025.

CD Projekt shared the update on the game's official X account, thanking players for helping Night City's "40 million dreamers" become a reality.

Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty and Cyberpunk 2 Keep the Franchise Growing

The sales milestone comes after Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty surpassed 10M copies sold, according to CD Projekt's first quarter (Q1) 2025 earnings. Marking the announcement, Joint CEO of CD PROJEKT, Michał Nowakowski, stated that the game's continued success reflects its lasting appeal and provides "a great foundation" for future Cyberpunk projects. Those plans include Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2, which is scheduled to debut in Fall 2026.

Development is also progressing on Cyberpunk 2, previously known as Project Orion, with 163 developers assigned to the project as of the end of April 2026. Franchise creator Mike Pondsmith has revealed that the sequel will feature another city alongside Night City, describing its atmosphere as resembling "Chicago gone wrong."

Actor Keanu Reeves has also stated to IGN that he would "love to play Johnny Silverhand again."

Cyberpunk 2077's Recovery Reshaped the Series

Cyberpunk 2077 launched to widespread criticism over technical issues, particularly on consoles, prompting Sony to temporarily remove it from the PlayStation Store. CD Projekt spent years improving the game through major updates, including the 2.0 overhaul and Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty (DLC) expansion, transforming its reputation.

Even so, Nowakowski recently told Edge magazine that the studio has not yet completed its "full redemption arc."

The announcement also follows CD Projekt's decision to rename its parent company to CD Projekt Red, aligning it with the development studio. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt remains CD PROJEKT's best-selling title with 65M copies sold. Meanwhile, Cyberpunk 2077 reaching 40M copies sold underscores its transformation into one of gaming's most successful long-term comeback stories.
