FIFA is officially getting back into the digital dugout, but its latest move looks less like a simulation and more like a comic book crossover. The organization has announced FIFA Heroes, a free-to-play, 5v5 arcade-style soccer game that trades realistic physics for "multiverse" teams. Launching first on mobile on April 28, 2026, the game marks a massive shift in strategy as FIFA attempts to reclaim its brand following its high-profile split from Electronic Arts in 2023.
Developed by New York-based Enver Studio and published by Solace, the title abandons the traditional pacing, as everything is built around quick bursts of high-octane action. Players won't just be managing standard rosters; they’ll be building squads that mix real-life soccer legends with mythological figures.
The game’s biggest draw is the reported return of the late Argentine icon Diego Maradona, who can now be paired on the pitch with Thor, the Norse god of thunder. Other playable characters include the legendary Sun Wukong (the Monkey King) and official World Cup mascots from the U.S., Mexico, and Canada.
The experience is defined by what the developers call "game-changing powers" that replace traditional tactics. Forget about perfecting the offside trap; players in FIFA Heroes will utilize teleporting passes, meteor shots, magnetic tackles, and even flaming soccer balls to score. Kyle Joyce, Director at Solace, noted that the goal was to prioritize "drama, speed, and rivalry" over complex simulation. She said football has a unique way of bringing people together, and this game is our way of putting that love of the sport into play.”
FIFA Heroes Release Date and Motorola Partnership
With the 2026 FIFA World Cup just around the corner, this release is a strategic push to capture the mobile gaming market. In a unique distribution move, FIFA Heroes will come pre-installed on select Motorola devices, ensuring it lands directly in the hands of millions of users at launch, as per Gamespot. While the mobile and PC versions debut in April, FIFA has confirmed that versions for PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch will follow shortly after, complete with cross-progression support.
This is the first major licensed FIFA title since the organization ended its nearly 30-year partnership with EA Sports. The breakup occurred after FIFA reportedly requested a $1 billion licensing fee for each four-year cycle, a price tag EA declined before rebranding its series to EA Sports FC.
By launching a free-to-play title built around ‘multiverse’ teams, FIFA is signaling that its future in gaming will be defined by experimental, "personality-driven" experiences rather than competing directly with the simulation giants.
