  • Rumors suggest a surprise paid The Witcher 3 secret expansion is coming in May 2026.
  • Fool's Theory is reportedly developing the The Witcher 3 secret expansion to bridge the gap to the sequel.
  • Analysts predict the The Witcher 3 secret expansion will generate massive revenue before the next mainline game.

Nearly nine years after its original debut, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is reportedly set to receive The Witcher 3 secret expansion. According to emerging reports from industry insiders and financial analysts, CD Projekt Red is preparing to launch a surprise paid expansion for the acclaimed RPG, with a potential release window targeted for as early as May 2026.

The news stems from a recent report by Mateusz Chrzanowski, an analyst at Noble Securities. Chrzanowski stated last month that he expects "the next paid add-on (DLC) for The Witcher 3" to arrive in May of this year. This new content is viewed as a critical strategic move to serve as both a narrative and marketing "bridge" between the original trilogy and the upcoming sequel, The Witcher 4, which is not expected to launch until late 2027.

Reports indicate that CD Projekt Red is not developing this expansion internally. Instead, the project is reportedly being handled by Fool's Theory, an external studio that is simultaneously working on the remake of The Witcher 1 for CD Projekt. This aligns with claims from Polish gaming insider Borys Nieśpielak, who stated last year that the new content was secretly in development at the same studio. Speaking to Eurogamer, Nieśpielak confirmed that his information had been verified by "several" independent sources, lending significant credibility to the rumor.

The Witcher 3 Expansion in 2026

The expansion is poised to be a major financial success. With The Witcher 3 having already sold over 50 million copies worldwide since 2015, the potential customer base is enormous. This revenue stream would help sustain player interest and stabilize earnings during the long development cycle currently occupied by the production of the next mainline entry, a multiplayer game, and the first game's remake, as reported by VGC.

While CD Projekt Red has not officially confirmed the specific expansion, the company’s leadership has dropped hints regarding undisclosed releases. In a recent financial report, CFO Piotr Nielubowicz noted that "there is a chance that new content hinted upon in recent calls and reports may see release in the coming year," which would have an impact on the company's financial results.

The studio is currently juggling multiple major projects, including the highly anticipated The Witcher 4. Last summer, the company debuted a tech demo showcasing the "powerful foundation" they are building with Epic Games using Unreal Engine 5.

Although some fans mistook the footage for a game reveal, CD Projekt clarified that it was strictly a look at the cutting-edge technology powering the sequel, rather than the game itself. For now, fans await an official announcement regarding the rumored expansion, which could be imminent given the reported May release window.
