Highlights

  • Divinity: Original Sin 2 more than doubled its Steam player count after The Game Awards, jumping from around 4,000 to a peak of 9,325 and entering Steam’s top 200 most-played games.
  • The entire Divinity series saw renewed activity, with Divinity: Original Sin, Divine Divinity, Divinity 2: Ego Draconis, and Dragon Commander all recording post-TGA player increases.
  • The surge follows Larian Studios’ momentum from Baldur’s Gate 3, with upcoming Steam sales and a reported PS5 update for Original Sin 2 likely to sustain interest.

Thousands of players have returned to Divinity: Original Sin 2 following The Game Awards (TGA), where a new Divinity trailer reignited interest in Larian Studios’ long-running RPG franchise. The surge more than doubled the game’s recent Steam player counts and lifted the title into the platform’s top 200 most-played games.

Before The Game Awards, Divinity: Original Sin 2 was reaching peak concurrent player numbers of roughly 4,000.

Over the weekend after the event, it climbed to a peak of 9,325 players, according to Steam data. For a role-playing game released in 2017, the jump marks a significant revival and underscores the franchise’s continued pull.

Divinity: Original Sin 2 Player Spike Signals Franchise-Wide Revival

The renewed attention was not limited to Original Sin 2. The first Divinity: Original Sin also recorded increased engagement, rising from a November peak of 941 players to 1,757 following the event. Other entries across the series saw smaller but clear gains, suggesting a broader return to Rivellon rather than a one-off spike.

Divine Divinity, the original 2002 release, rose from a peak of 33 players before The Game Awards to 153 afterward. Beyond Divinity increased from one concurrent player to nine, while Divinity 2: Ego Draconis climbed from a recent peak of 62 players to 140.

Even Divinity: Dragon Commander, the franchise’s RTS spin-off, saw its peak rise from eight players to 23.

The franchise-wide bump follows Larian Studios’ recent prominence after the success of Baldur’s Gate 3, which has drawn new attention to the studio’s earlier work and shared lore.

With Steam’s Winter Sale approaching and reports of a possible PlayStation 5 update for Divinity: Original Sin 2, player numbers could continue to rise as both longtime fans and newcomers revisit the series.
