Steam-style player counts are finally coming to PS5!

PlayStation Tests Steam-Style PS5 Welcome Hub Player Count Widget

A new PS5 Welcome Hub beta widget called Community Activity brings Steam-style transparency to PlayStation, revealing weekly unique player counts and trending titles for console gamers.

Highlights

  • PlayStation is testing a "Community Activity" Welcome Hub widget showing region-based weekly player metrics via "Top 10" and "Trending Now" lists.
  • Early US data shows live-service giants dominate console engagement, with Fortnite leading at 14.6 million weekly players, nearly 3x its closest competitor.
  • The widget tracks weekly unique players rather than concurrent users, though Sony has yet to clarify its full methodology.

Dynamic tracking with 'Trending Now' and 'Top 10'

While tools like SteamDB have always been useful, they only show a fraction of a game's total footprint. Getting this kind of official insight directly from PlayStation is a meaningful change for the console ecosystem. As Mystic points out, the Top 10 list will likely remain a static home for perennial heavyweights. The Trending Now tab will be the more dynamic of the two, reflecting how players rush back to older titles for seasonal updates or flock to viral indie hits.

Examples from Mystic's video give a sense of how that plays out: Overwatch logged a 255% surge in matches following its season drop, Company of Heroes 3 saw a 249% surge in gameplay hours, DOOM Eternal posted a 188% surge, and Test Drive Unlimited: Solar Crown jumped 128% in matches.

The reaction from the industry has been a mix of curiosity and unease. Circana games director Mat Piscatella joked on social media: "I give the 3rd party pubs about 5 minutes after seeing this before they start sending emails demanding the user numbers get pulled."

Caveats and unanswered questions

There are real drawbacks to keep in mind. The data is region-based, so you only see what is popular in your specific country rather than getting a global picture. It tracks aggregated weekly counts rather than the live, concurrent user data popularized by PC platforms, and the metric appears to be weekly unique players (any account that launched the game at least once over seven days).

Sony has also not clarified important methodology details. It's unclear when a "week" begins and ends, whether minimum playtime thresholds apply, or how PS4 backwards-compatible sessions on PS5 are counted. There are also notable omissions in the early US list: Roblox and NBA 2K are both absent despite their well-documented popularity on the platform, raising questions about which titles qualify for inclusion. The widget appears to surface only PS5-native games, which means mid-tier and niche titles may never appear even with healthy player bases.

Because the feature is still in its beta firmware phase, PlayStation may tweak how these metrics are calculated, their regional scope, and how they are presented. A wider release timeline remains unconfirmed. The real test will come when GTA VI launches in November or when Sony ships its next major first-party live-service title. If that game doesn't appear in the Top 10, the discourse will arrive fast.
