  • The 2003 Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time returns to Xbox Series X/S via revived backwards compatibility.
  • This digital release follows the sudden 2026 cancellation of Ubisoft’s long-delayed Sands of Time Remake.
  • Leaked Microsoft Store listings confirm the classic's arrival alongside Xbox's upcoming 25th-anniversary celebrations.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time may make a comeback, proving that a heartbreaking remake cancellation can’t keep the game down. Gamers who are still hurting from Ubisoft pulling the plug on the modern overhaul have an unexpected reason to celebrate today. The original 2003 classic is officially set for a surprise return on Xbox platforms later this year, as claimed by Gaming Bible, offering a much-needed silver lining for a community frustrated by years of development limbo.

This digital revival ties directly into Xbox's upcoming 25th-anniversary celebrations. New Xbox CEO Asha Sharma recently confirmed that the console's fan-favorite backwards compatibility program is officially returning. The goal is to bring missing Xbox and Xbox 360 titles natively to the Series X/S digital storefronts. While there are already plenty of older games available to play natively on modern hardware, a massive chunk of gaming history is still missing.

Once this update goes live, players will likely be able to buy the 2003 classic digitally—but if you have your original disc lying around gathering dust, now is the time to pull it out of storage, as your Series X/S will support it.

The secret slipped out when a handful of games briefly appeared on the official Microsoft Store backend before being swiftly delisted. Reliable dataminer Better xCloud managed to identify the slip-up, spotting the time-manipulating adventure right alongside other returning legacy titles like Armed & Dangerous, Aegis Wing, and Mars: War Logs.

Surviving the Ubisoft Shake-Up

This return feels especially sweet considering the massive disappointment the gaming community faced in January 2026. Earlier this year, Ubisoft underwent a major shake-up in terms of leadership and resource allocation, which led to a lot of sudden, drastic changes in its release schedule. While the highly anticipated Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag remake—now officially known as Assassin’s Creed IV: Resynced, survived the cuts, other games weren’t so lucky.

The biggest casualty of this corporate restructuring was the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake. After being trapped in a grueling six-year development cycle and bouncing between multiple studios, the game was reportedly almost finished and due for a launch later this year before it was abruptly canned. Both fans and the developers who poured their time into the project were equally horrified by the cancellation.

At the time of writing, neither Xbox nor PlayStation consoles support the original version of the game. For game preservation advocates, this upcoming release significantly boosts Microsoft's ecosystem. If Sands of Time is only available on Xbox while PlayStation tries to catch up with its own PlayStation Plus Classics library, it is going to be a huge, exclusive win for Microsoft's console.

Sure, playing an older port might not be the ground-up, 3D remake Ubisoft promised us for over half a decade, but we will gladly take what we can get. For now, fans can simply rest easy knowing the iconic platformer is finally finding a home on modern hardware.
