- Securing 43.8 million votes, the Steam Awards 2025 celebrated Silksong's decisive triumph.
In a monumental moment for indie gaming, Hollow Knight: Silksong has been named Steam’s 2025 Game of the Year. Valve revealed that Team Cherry’s long-awaited sequel secured the top honor following a record-breaking voting period. The Steam Awards 2025 saw the highest engagement in the platform's history, with 43.8 million votes cast across all eleven categories, a significant surge in participation compared to previous years.
Silksong’s victory was decisive in a crowded field. The Metroidvania masterpiece claimed the Game of the Year title by edging out fierce competition from major releases like Black Myth: Wukong, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, and the indie hit Animal Well. In addition to the top prize, Silksong also picked up the "Best Game You Suck At" award, a playful nod from the community to the game's famously punishing difficulty.
As announced on the Steam Award 2025 page, Valve noted that the voting window ran from Dec 18 to Jan 3, with every non-limited Steam account eligible to cast a single vote per category.
Hades 2, Baldur’s Gate 3 Among Key Winners
While Silksong took the headline spot, other titles also saw significant recognition. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, which had already set a record for most awards in one night at The Game Awards late last year, secured the "Best Soundtrack" award. Supergiant Games’ Hades 2 was voted "Best Game on Steam Deck," cementing its status as a portable favorite, while the "Outstanding Visual Style" award went to Silent Hill F for its distinct aesthetic.
In the "Labor of Love" category, which honors older games that continue to receive developer support, Baldur’s Gate 3 emerged victorious. The 2023 RPG giant continues to maintain a massive following, with Valve noting, “The team is well past the debut of their creative baby, but being the good parents they are, these devs continue to nurture and support their creation.”
The awards highlighted a diverse range of genres. "VR Game of the Year" went to The Midnight Walk, while the "Better With Friends" award was claimed by Peak, a physics-based multiplayer game where groups attempt to climb mountains together. Other notable winners included Arc Raiders for "Most Innovative Gameplay," Dispatch for "Outstanding Story-Rich Game," and RV There Yet?, which took home the "Sit Back and Relax" award.
Beyond the trophies, Silksong has proven to be a massive commercial juggernaut since its launch in September 2025. After years of development, the game sold over 7 million copies within its first three months, according to Tweaktown. The title has also maintained a 91% positive recent review rating, as per Steam.
