Highlights

  • Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick confirmed 2K's NFL game is dead after creative development failed.
  • He also ruled out a return to MLB 2K, citing heavy financial losses during its run.
  • EA Sports has held exclusive simulation football rights since 2004, leaving 2K little room to compete.

2K's attempt at a National Football League (NFL) game is over. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick confirmed the cancellation on May 6, 2026, in an interview with Game File. He said that the project failed on creative grounds rather than due to any licensing dispute with the league. Take-Two’s creative goals did not work out as it had planned, and it is pursuing games for its other franchises instead.

What Happened to the 2K NFL Game?

2K had been working on an arcade-style American football title since announcing its NFL partnership in 2021. Since EA Sports holds exclusive rights to NFL simulation games, a deal it has maintained since 2005, 2K's only lane was an arcade or non-sim experience, something closer to the old NFL Blitz or NBA Jam style of game. It never got there, and Take-Two has given up on the idea, according to Zelnick's recent interview.

The last time 2K released an NFL title was ESPN NFL 2K5 in 2004, a game that remains one of the most critically acclaimed football titles ever made with a Metacritic Score of 92/100. EA moved quickly to lock up the simulation license the following year, effectively ending competition in the space for two decades. 2K's 2021 announcement had raised hopes that at least some form of the rivalry could be revived.

Zelnick was also asked about reviving the Major League Baseball (MLB) 2K series, which ran from 2006 to 2013 before being quietly discontinued. He said that there are no plans to continue the series. According to him, Take-Two had a tough history with MLB and did not make enough money. MLB The Show has since established itself as the dominant baseball game on the market with no meaningful competition in sight.

EA's Football Monopoly is Still the Elephant in the Room

Madden NFL has operated without a direct competitor for over 20 years, and the results have been predictably uneven. The series has faced consistent criticism from fans over stagnation, with yearly releases that often deliver minimal changes to core gameplay and franchise modes that have lagged behind what players have asked for. The absence of competition removes the market pressure that typically forces improvement.

The situation is not entirely unprecedented in sports games. MLB The Show is the only licensed baseball game on the market. The National Hockey League (NHL) has gone uncontested for years. The pattern across sports games is one of consolidation, with exclusive licensing deals concentrating development within single studios and limiting what players can choose from.

2K briefly offered a glimpse of what a competing football product might look like before its NFL game collapsed. With that project now confirmed dead, Madden remains the only option for NFL fans on console and PC, a position it has held since 2005 with no credible challenge on the horizon.
