Highlights
- Indie hit Windrose topped April sales with 1.7M copies, beating Crimson Desert.
- Kraken Express earned $44M revenue while maintaining 250,000 daily active users.
- EA Sports FC 26 and Pragmata trailed behind despite strong multi-platform performance.
Windrose, an indie pirate survival game, has officially claimed the title of best-selling game in April. Despite only being available on PC through Steam Early Access, the debut title from Kraken Express managed to outsell heavy-hitting multi-platform blockbusters. According to a new report from Alinea Analytics, Windrose moved an estimated 1.7 million copies following its mid-April launch, allowing the new oceanic adventure to narrowly beat out Pearl Abyss’s action RPG Crimson Desert for the top spot.
April saw a slew of major game releases across PC and consoles, with highly anticipated titles like Pragmata, Saros, and Invincible Vs. all arriving within a busy 30-day window. However, the Alinea Analytics sales charts paint a surprising picture of what players were actually buying. Crimson Desert continued its strong momentum from its massive March debut, coming in at a close second with 1.6 million copies sold in April. EA Sports FC 26 followed in third place with 1.4 million copies sold. Capcom's Pragmata took fourth place as the only other new April release to make the top five, while Slay the Spire 2 rounded out the leaderboards in fifth place.
The rapid ascent of Windrose is nothing short of incredible for a debut studio. The indie title generated roughly $44 million USD in gross revenue by the end of the month, clearing 500,000 copies in its first 48 hours and hitting the one-million mark by day six. Player engagement has been staggering, with the game peaking at over 200,000 concurrent players and maintaining a steady flow of 250,000 daily active users mid-week. Players are already finding themselves happily lost at sea, with roughly 15% of the community having logged more than 50 hours into the sandbox.

Global Market Estimates and Multi-Platform Success
It is worth noting that these numbers are sales estimates and do not show a totally complete picture of the global market. For instance, Nintendo Switch 2 sales are not included in this chart, which slightly skews the placements against a multi-platform release like Pragmata. Despite landing in fourth place for April, Pragmata still enjoyed an incredibly strong launch, having just reached 2 million copies sold across all platforms, as per Wccftech.
Crimson Desert also remains a massive financial success with a deeply invested community. While Steam accounted for 1 million of its April sales, its console players are buckling in for the long haul, with 20% of PlayStation and Xbox players already exceeding 100 hours of gameplay.
Looking ahead, Kraken Express plans to keep the wind in its sails with a transparent, community-focused roadmap. The studio expects Windrose to remain in Early Access before a full 1.0 release, which promises to expand the game with new biomes, bosses, and ship customization options. As we get deeper into the year, it will be fascinating to see where Windrose ultimately lands, and if it will be the latest early access darling to take the world by storm far ahead of its official launch.
