  • Xbox’s Disc-to-Digital program will support thousands of physical games.
  • Supported discs can unlock digital, PC, and cloud gaming access.
  • Project Helix’s future disc-drive support remains unconfirmed.

Xbox is letting owners of supported physical games unlock digital entitlements without giving up their discs. Announced on Aug 26, the Disc-to-Digital program will reportedly enter testing for Xbox Insiders on Aug 31, 2026. It will initially support thousands of Xbox One and Xbox Series X titles.

The feature could become important as console makers reassess physical media. Sony is moving toward ending physical disc production for new PlayStation games in 2028, while Xbox CEO, Asha Sharma, has declined to confirm whether the upcoming Project Helix will include a disc drive.

How Xbox’s Disc-to-Digital Program Works

Players can insert a supported disc into an Xbox One or Xbox Series X to unlock its digital entitlement. Once activated, eligible games can be played without the disc and support Xbox Play Anywhere or Xbox Cloud Gaming where available, while the physical copy remains usable.

The entitlement also follows the disc if it is lent or sold.

As Sharma put it, “Your physical game library is more than a collection of discs,” emphasizing the value of preserving existing collections. The program will launch with thousands of titles, with more added over time. Most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games are expected to qualify, although publishers control participation.

Xbox 360 and original Xbox discs are excluded for now, while some older Xbox One discs may not be compatible.

Xbox Keeps its Next-Gen Disc Strategy Unclear

Sharma told the BBC that she knows “players love physical media” and wants to preserve “choice,” but avoided confirming future disc-drive support. She instead implied that Xbox must consider “efficiency and affordability alongside performance.”

The program also addresses concerns about preserving existing collections. Xbox head of next generation, Jason Ronald, has framed the initiative around keeping players' libraries accessible as technology, devices, and distribution models change.

Meanwhile, former Xbox executive, Andy Lunique, noted that supported physical games could work on Xbox, PC, and the ROG Xbox Ally. Cloud access would also extend to laptops and phones, while the disc could still be lent to others.

With a broader rollout planned in the coming months, Xbox is bridging physical ownership with digital access as the industry shifts away from discs.
