Roblox Corporation is rolling out two major updates at the same time with Roblox Plus and a revamped parental control system. Roblox continues to grow as the biggest user-generated content (UGC) gaming platform, but it also raises concerns surrounding online safety for children.
The new parental controls aim to address longstanding privacy and safety issues on the platform. While the platform has taken steps in the right direction, there are still some glaring issues that it needs to look into.
Roblox Introduces Plus Subscription for Developers
The first and most important change Roblox is introducing is the Roblox Plus subscription. Priced at $4.99 per month, the service offers discounts on in-game purchases, gives access to private servers, and more.
The subscription encourages spending by its young audience instead of curbing it. The platform is riddled with gacha-style games where players gamble for digital items. The company has not taken any steps to address these monetization practices and offering discounts only encourages more spending.
What’s more concerning is the introduction of Robux transfers. Users can transfer currency directly from one account to another. The platform has introduced an approval systems, but it still exposes users to potential scams and a black market system where players trade in-game items for real currency.
Roblox Addresses Unmoderated Content Concerns
The platform now assigns users to various account types based on age. Roblox Kids accounts cover ages 5 to 8, while Roblox Select accounts apply to users aged 9 to 15. Users automatically transition between these categories as they grow older.
Each account type comes with predefined restrictions. Younger users are limited to content rated minimal or mild, and communication features are disabled by default. Older users receive broader access but still operate within moderated boundaries.
This system eliminates the need to manually configure settings for parents. Roblox has also introduced a continuous evaluation system for games available to younger audiences. Titles are selected based on developer verification, content ratings, and ongoing moderation. This creates a filtered ecosystem where only approved experiences appear for under-16 users.
The platform claims that it is moving away from a fully open model for younger players and toward a controlled environment. Despite its stance, a lot of pay-to-win games like Blox Fruits and BedWars are available to young audiences. The new changes do not address the core issue of microtransactions and aggressive monetization in a platform that has generated over 10B monthly hours of engagement.
Privacy Concerns Remain Relevant
The updated parental controls focus on giving parents more direct insight into how their children use Roblox. Parents can monitor gameplay activity, manage communication settings, and control spending behavior.
New tools allow parents to approve or block individual games. Chat settings can be managed for longer periods, and screen-time tracking provides a clearer picture of their children’s habits.
The system is designed to provide control, but it still requires parents to be tech-savvy and tinker with the platform’s settings to have full control. The new system depends heavily on age verification. Roblox uses a combination of global age-check mechanisms and parent-linked verification to assign users to account types.
This introduces a dependency on sensitive user data. Age assurance systems require personal data, which has been a key concern among many privacy-minded individuals. Discord attempted to introduce age verification recently and faced immediate backlash. Roblox has suffered data breaches on multiple occasions, and it needs to be more transparent with how personal data is handled or used.
The recent changes position Roblox as a more controlled ecosystem, especially for younger audiences. However, it needs to be more transparent, address privacy concerns, and provide safeguards for its young audience. A lot of the changes depend on user trust at a time when data leaks have made people wary about trusting online platforms with their data.
