Highlights

  • KADOKAWA and Aniplex have launched a joint venture, ANIMEC, to centralize theatrical anime film distribution and promotion.
  • The new organization aims to optimize release strategies and create value across the production and distribution pipeline.
  • ANIMEC will have access to Sony's marketing infrastructure and KADOKAWA's publishing expertise, along with the joint IP-library.

KADOKAWA Corp. and Aniplex Inc. have established a joint venture, ANIMEC Inc., to handle the distribution and promotion of anime films. According to Kadokawa’s notice on March 2, the new entity will focus on theatrical releases in Japan, aiming to deliver “captivating anime film experiences” to a wider audience.

ANIMEC will oversee all aspects of the distribution and promotion of anime films, including theatrical releases of TV anime. The partners said the company aims to co-create the value of anime works by strengthening coordination between production committees, distributors, stakeholders, and the audience.

The company is reported to adopt “optimal release strategies” for each of its projects and maximize the value. ANIMEC will be headquartered in Tokyo, while operating as a jointly owned venture between KADOKAWA and Aniplex. Aniplex is a subsidiary of Sony Music Entertainment (Japan), which implies that ANIMEC will work in tandem with KADOKAWA and Sony Group, two prominent names in the anime industry.

KADOKAWA and Sony Move to Reshape Anime Film Distribution with ANIMEC

The establishment of ANIMEC signifies a comprehensive initiative by both Sony and KADOKAWA to accelerate their dominance over the anime distribution chain. Aniplex is an entity responsible for planning and producing anime-related IPs, and have worked domestically and internationally for almost three decades.

Fullmetal Alchemist, Demon Slayer, Fate series, Wind Breaker, and Sword Art Online are a few of the well-known anime franchises that Aniplex has produced and distributed. Meanwhile, KADOKAWA is one of the biggest publishers and owners of anime IPs in Japan, holding shares in several television and film production committees.

With the joint venture between Kadokawa and Aniplex, the new company has access to Sony’s theatrical and marketing infrastructure, along with KADOKAWA’s publishing operations. The announcement also follows Sony Group becoming KADOKAWA’s largest shareholder in December 2024.

Sony has long become a key player in the anime market, from controlling anime streaming platform Crunchyroll, to overseeing production across anime-related music, film, and gaming. By centralizing promotion and distribution planning through the jointly owned company, ANIMEC, the partners are aiming to consolidate production and distribution in a sector that has delivered record-breaking box office success in recent years.
