Assam Govt Exec Meet HYBE India CEO Again Amid its Concert Push

India’s live events sector is expanding beyond metros as policy, K-pop growth, and cross-border strategy meet to reshape concert geography.

  • Guwahati is emerging as a new concert hub with state backing and HYBE push, aiming to bring global acts.
  • Assam’s robust concert policy is supporting HYBE’s intentions of building a local K-pop ecosystem here in India.
  • Although unconfirmed, a major HYBE K-pop act like BTS could unlock significant economic impact for India’s live events market, which is growing every year.

The concert economy is growing in India, however, mainly only in the metro cities of Mumbai, Delhi, and Bangalore. As global touring boosts worldwide, including India, Assam’s Guwahati has emerged as a new contender in it. The state hosted a Post Malone concert last year on Dec 8, proving it could rival popular concert stops nationally and globally. However, a recent meetup of Assam government executive, Padmapani Bora, and HYBE India CEO Damien Woochang Lee has sparked a fray of questions from fans and industry observers alike; people now want to know whether we are officially going to see HYBE acts perform in India, that too in Assam.

After Hanumankind's appearance at the BTS concerts, many reported that HYBE sublabels, Source Music, and BigHit Music are reportedly in talks for a potential Hanumankind collab, but the reports largely remain unconfirmed. If the reports are to be believed, we could probably see newer HYBE acts like LE SSERAFIM and CORTIS potentially collaborating with Hanumankind and other Indian artists. As for a BTS event, things are yet to unfold.

K-pop acts are already famous in India. Addressing a Delhi K-pop Festival at the Yashobhoomi Convention Centre, the South Korean First Lady highlighted India’s rising influence, noting its status as a key player among the 30 surveyed nations where Korean culture has attained mainstream popularity. The survey was conducted by the South Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and was released on March 30, 2026.

Assam’s Policy Push and HYBE’s Strategic Entry

Padmapani Bora’s recent meeting with the HYBE India CEO, which was confirmed by an Instagram post on May 4, 2026, is his second interaction with Lee since December 2025. The meet indicates a deepening association that moves beyond the standard diplomatic courtesy. Damien Woochang Lee was there in Guwahati to inaugurate and address the crowd at the HYBE pop-up park (May 3, 2026), while also overseeing the offline audition process (May 4, 2026) in the city. Interestingly, Bora, who is the Managing Director of the Assam Tourism Development Corporation (ATDC), had made another post on April 17, recognizing ATDC as a Cultural Partner to HYBE India’s audition and pop-up park activation in Guwahati. This aggressive Northeast expansion is potentially a result of Assam’s 2025 Concert Tourism Policy, which views live events as economic multipliers. The policy aims to make three areas: Guwahati, Dibrugarh, and Jorhat, as primary concert locations.

Although any concert from any HYBE act is not confirmed yet, industry observers note a move like it could bring in millions in economic impact. EY estimates that a single major tour by a popular or global act can generate ₹950 Crore (~ $100 million USD) in spillover revenue across the tourism, retail, and hospitality sectors of the country. Amidst this, Guwahati is positioning itself as a strategic hub, bracing for a “global cultural breakthrough,” which is being built in real-time. It must be noted that it isn’t singularly about fandom or market demand but about a live events sector that surpassed the ₹12,000 Cr (~ $1.3B) mark in 2024 and is projected to grow at a 19% CAGR.

From Fandom to Infrastructure: Building a K-pop Ecosystem in India

The corporate alliance with HYBE India’s pop-up park and audition drive showcases a clinical strategy. The Guwahati takeover is not just about music or performance but aims towards a lifestyle ecosystem featuring partners like Samsung Galaxy, Kia, and H&M. Apart from boosting brand value, K-pop is known for smoothly integrating pop culture or pop culture-backed elements into everyday life.

Meanwhile, the talent pipeline is narrowing; Guwahati’s offline audition ended on May 4, but interested participants born between 2005 and 2011 can still apply online, where the applications will be actively viewed till next month. The aspirants will have exactly 90 seconds to make an impact to get selected for HYBE’s upcoming global girl group, pushing the Northeast from a key consumer of the Korean Wave to a primary producer of it.

The K-wave momentum is also viewed extensively in the highest levels of statecraft, as on April 20, 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and South Korean President Lee Jae-myung announced an India-Korea Friendship Festival for 2028. The two countries are also set to double their trade to $50B by 2030. Adding to this is KOCCA India, which has introduced its K-supporters program, facilitating Koreaboos to disseminate various information related to the country, while also creating different joint IPs with appropriate stakeholders of both countries.

South Korean First Lady and JYP Entertainment founder J.Y. Park attend a K-pop event in New Delhi.

From the First Lady Kim Hye-kyung and J.Y. Park attending K-pop championships in Delhi to HYBE making Mumbai its fifth international HQ, the strategy is fairly transparent. India is not just a top market for Korean culture, but a new frontier for a joint global creative economy.
