Is Guwahati the next stop on the BTS Arirang World Tour extension?
BTS in India? Assam Govt Official and HYBE Exec Meetup Sparks Buzz
As HYBE analyzes India's growing live entertainment sector, strategic goals and market expansion spotlight Guwahati as a potentially significant hub.
- An old exchange between officials of Assam government and a K-pop giant HYBE has reignited buzz about a prospective BTS show in Guwahati.
- Assam's concert tourism efforts, emphasized by Post Malone's Guwahati performance, intends to put the city on the global touring map.
- EY and PWC's growth predictions highlight increased worldwide interest in India's live events business.
Following a meetup between the Assam administration and HYBE, South Korea's entertainment powerhouse, speculation for a global cultural breakthrough for Northeast India has been growing. Padmapani Bora, Managing Director of the Assam Tourism Development Corporation, met with a senior HYBE executive in Guwahati, fueling expectations for a possible appearance by K-pop superstar BTS. While an official announcement regarding this matter is still pending, the meeting represents a strategic synergy between India's growing "concert economy" and the global music industry's shift toward newer markets.
Although the meetup between the Assam government official and the HYBE Executive took place months ago, rumors have reignited again amid BTS’ anticipated return this month. Despite India’s exclusion from its latest year-long Arirang World Tour leg, the latest buzz has fans hopeful for a surprise stop in India during the extended dates of the tour.
For an area that was formerly deemed remote from global touring circuits, the potential of hosting an act of this magnitude represents a major change in India's live entertainment landscape. HYBE, which oversees bands like Tomorrow X Together, SEVENTEEN, and BTS, has already shown a long-term commitment to the subcontinent by establishing its Indian affiliate, Hybe India Entertainment Pvt. Ltd., in Mumbai last year. This fifth internationally set headquarters of the K-pop entity is intended to identify local talent and incorporate India's vast music industry into HYBE's vast global network.
Policy Push Turns Assam’s Guwahati Into a Concert Hub
Assam's strong pursuit of overseas stars is based on a determined policy move. This effort has already yielded rewards on December 8, 2025, when American rapper Post Malone performed in Guwahati, marking the city's first significant foreign event. Officials see these events as more than just entertainment. They find these events to act as economic engines with the potential to generate significant spillover. Back in May 2025, the state established a Concert Tourism Policy, which aims to use large-scale live concerts to boost regional business and hospitality. Additionally, according to EY's industry estimate, a single large tour can generate up to ₹950 crore in total economic impact across India’s tourism, retail, and hospitality sectors.
The macroeconomic indicators supporting this growth are strong. According to a recent study from EY and EY-Parthenon, India's live events business crossed the ₹12,000 crore threshold in 2024. Some other research projects have also estimated the broader market at roughly ₹13,000 crore (~ $1.41 billion USD). The sector is expected to develop at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 19% over the next three years, positioning it as one of the most active categories in the media and entertainment landscape. Reportedly, in 2024, organized live events increased by 15%, topping the ₹100B milestone for the first time ever.
PwC also estimates that the domestic media and entertainment business was valued at around ₹2.5 trillion (~ $29.4B) in 2024. The sector is expected to reach ₹3.1T by 2027, with an annual growth rate of 7-8%. On a global basis, the entertainment and media business is on track to generate $3.5T by 2029. More importantly, live events continue to be a dominant consumer spending category even as digital media consumption rises. In India, live music revenues have risen from $29M in 2020 to around $149M in 2024, with a forecast increase to $164M by 2029.
Global Touring Industry Including K-pop Eyes India’s Growth
As the convergence between digital fandom and live music income grows, Guwahati is positioning itself to take a sizable chunk of this youth-driven digital culture. Whether the current engagement between Assam government and HYBE officials results in an immediate stadium date or lays the groundwork for future partnerships, the message is quite obvious that India's capacity for global entertainment is no longer limited to its conventional metropolitan hubs.
