After years of waiting through military enlistments, BTS fans were ecstatic for the group’s mega comeback concert, BTS THE COMEBACK LIVE | ARIRANG, scheduled for March 21 at Seoul’s Gwanghwamun Square. However, that overwhelming joy surrounding the BTS Gwanghwamun Concert has quickly been eclipsed by fear. Following reports of potential terror threats and bomb hoaxes, fans are actively pleading with HYBE and South Korean authorities to cancel the event entirely, prioritizing human lives over the highly anticipated performance.
The anxiety sweeping across social media is palpable. On platforms like X and Reddit, devoted ARMYs are voicing deep concerns for the safety of RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V, and Jungkook, as well as the massive crowds expected to attend. One fan captured the collective worry, writing, “Why are they even doing this? Cancel it if possible, their safety is our priority.”
Others echoed the sentiment with desperate pleas like, “Plssss keep my boys safeeeeee,” and “Those who army go plz be safe and I pray my bangtan also be safe.” For a fanbase that has waited years for this reunion, their willingness to give it up speaks volumes about the severity of the situation, as reported by News 18.
Government Steps Up BTS Concert Security
The South Korean government is not taking these fan concerns or the threats lightly. During a recent cabinet meeting, President Lee Jae-myung directed security officials to step up their preparations. He warned that although the possibility of an attack might be low, authorities must prepare thoroughly for the potential of terrorism.
President Lee emphasized the need to pool capabilities to make the event a safe and successful highlight of the Republic of Korea, noting it as an important opportunity to repeatedly confirm the excellence of K-pop and K-culture worldwide.
Police have vowed a zero-tolerance policy for any public threats, warning that anyone caught making a hoax will face immediate arrest and full civil liability. To protect the staggering estimated crowd of up to 260,000 attendees, the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency is rolling out unprecedented security measures. Around 6,500 officers will be deployed.
Seoul Implements Strict Crowd Control Measures
According to a Chosun Biz report, city officials recently held a third deputy mayoral inspection meeting to review readiness for the large-scale event. The safety campaign has even reached local communities, with several schools circulating newsletters urging parents to educate their children about staying safe in crowded environments. The notices advise families to discuss basic safety practices like staying with companions, identifying exits, and avoiding overcrowded zones.
On the ground, attendees will have to pass through metal detectors installed at over 30 different entrances starting at 7:00 a.m. The streets will be heavily fortified with police buses, steel spikes, and water-filled barricades, while officials are locking down the rooftops and front entrances of 31 nearby buildings to prevent dangerous crowd crushes from ticketless onlookers.
Despite the intense security atmosphere, organizers BigHit Music and HYBE are moving forward with the logistics for the 8:00 p.m. KST show, which celebrates the release of their fifth studio album, ARIRANG.
Following multiple inspections by the Seoul Metropolitan Government, the main viewing area's capacity was increased from 15,000 to 22,000 people. To safely accommodate the rest of the quarter-million fans expected to arrive, a zoned crowd system with no-overlap exits will be implemented, and additional viewing areas with giant LED screens are being set up.
Organizers are strictly enforcing no-camping rules and conducting real-time scalping checks. For the millions of fans who cannot be there in person, or simply choose to stay home for safety, the concert will be broadcast live on Netflix across 190 countries.
