  • BTS’ Arirang world tour in South Korea triggers a 3,377% rise in tourist arrivals and 3,699% surge in spending, generating $228K in 72 hours.
  • Fans are staying longer with higher per-capita spending, converting cities like Seoul and Goyang into extended, multi-day economic centers.
  • South Korea is formalizing and scaling the "BTS Effect" into its national tourism strategy as the band drives significant economic impact for the cities included as their tour stops.

BTS has skyrocketed South Korea’s economy as tourists flocked to the country to see the Arirang concert shows. As seen by the latest government data, the band’s impact has hit the country like a tidal wave instead of creating ripples.

BTS’ Goyang concerts set for three nights on April 9, 10, and 11 ignited a remarkable 3,377% rise in foreign tourist arrivals compared to the first quarter of the year. Additionally, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism states that the total influx of 48,581 global visitors pushed a 3,699% jump in local expenditure. That percentage translates into ₩‎337.8 million (~ $2,28,274.09 USD) in the context of hard currency, and this amount drove the local economy to a peak in just 72 hours, marking a 38-fold surge over the early-year averages of the city.

BTS Triggers Longer Fan Stays, Bigger Expenditures

According to a report by the Korea Times, the Ministry figures, which were pulled by using telecommunications data, credit card tracking, and on-site surveys, unveil a major pivot in traveler behavior. Fans aren't just coming into the country for the concert experience; they are staying for a longer period of time, and in some cases are even moving in. During the time period of the BTS Gwanghwamun Square comeback performance on March 21, the average foreign stay spiked to 8.7 days. This number depicted a significant increase from the usual 6.1 days. Even for BTS’ Goyang concerts, visitors stayed for an average of 7.4 days in the country.

The spending structure also followed a similar structure. At Gwanghwamun, tourists from around the world spent an average of ₩3.53M (~ $2,386). This is nearly ₩1.1M (~ $744) more than any normal visitor. However, in Goyang, a city that remained under Seoul’s shadow, that figure increased to ₩2.91M (~ $1,967), as reported by the Korea Times. This engagement was further boosted by HYBE’s “BTS-themed” citywide events, which successfully turned Seoul and its adjacent areas into a short-term theme park, making the areas a melting pot of global cultures and the global fandom.

South Korea Moves to Institutionalize the “BTS Effect”

The government is now moving towards a path to formalize this “BTS effect.” As reported by the Korea Times, Kang Jung-won, head of the Ministry’s Tourism Policy Bureau, said that the authorities aim to guarantee that the economic benefits of K-culture “trickle down” to all regional levels. This strategy will be tested again in June. The Ministry, since then, has announced a special promotional window from June 1 to 15, which is also marked by two BTS concerts in Busan on June 12 and 13. To maintain BTS’ momentum, the country is set to launch exhibitions and regional tours of iconic K-drama and music video filming locations, trying to turn a weekend concert into a countrywide residency program.

From Seoul to the US, BTS Drives Global Economic Ripples

Notably, the citywide BTS experience, which was seen in Seoul, will now be seen in Busan as well. Overseas, the citywide experience will be open to those in Las Vegas, USA. BTS is now moving towards El Paso, Texas, to perform at the Sun Bowl stadium.

Interestingly, as per KFOX14, Visit El Paso’s Executive Director, Brooke Underwood, revealed that the region expects an economic impact of $75M owing to BTS shows. As per data available online, Visit El Paso is the official destination marketing organization for the City of El Paso, Texas, working to promote tourism, conventions, and economic growth in the region.

A few days earlier, the group kicked off its North American leg of the Arirang world tour by performing for three nights at the Tampa Bay, Florida, where authorities (as reported by Tampa Bay Times) project an economic impact of $800M to $900M.
