Japan International Manga Award Opens 20th Submission Cycle

Ministry of Foreign Affairs sets June 30 deadline for non-Japanese creators as competition integrates content authenticity protocols

Highlights

  • Japan International Manga Award opens its 20th cycle, inviting non-Japanese manga creators.
  • The award continues to function as a cultural exchange platform, offering winners trips to Japan and industry exposure.
  • Rising global participation, especially from South Asia and Latin America, reflects shifting dynamics in manga creation.

Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs opened applications for the 20th Japan global Manga Award on April 15, to promote “international cultural exchanges.” The competition accepts submissions from international non-Japanese manga creators till June 30, maintaining eligibility criteria that now explicitly prohibit works generated by artificial intelligence (except for supplemental image generation, that must be declared).

The Japan International Manga Award structure allocates one Gold Award, three Silver Awards, and approximately 11 Bronze Awards across submitted works. Gold and Silver recipients receive seven-day trips to Japan for the February or March 2027 ceremony, with itineraries including publishing house visits and creator exchanges facilitated by the Japan Foundation.

As per the notice, submitted works require a minimum of 16 pages and must have been created between 2023 and 2026. The competition guidelines also prohibit manga works that were previously awarded in the Japan International Manga Award and multiple entries from one author.

The competition, established in 2007, under then-Foreign Minister Taro Aso's cultural policy framework, functions as soft power infrastructure supporting Japan's creative industries sector. The award also coincides with Japan’s diplomatic objectives to promote cultural media such as anime and manga through exchange rather than direct commercial promotion.

Japan International Manga Award Reinforces Japan's Cultural Export Strategy

Following the official announcement, the Consulate General of Japan in Kolkata drafted a ‘call for entry’ post on Facebook. The post emphasized how the Japan International Manga Award has been facilitating as a cultural exchange medium that supports Japan’s soft-power influence.

The award’s growing international participation also highlights a structural shift in the manga production economy. The 18th edition received a record 716 manga entries from 95 countries and regions, which grew to 738 entries in the 19th edition in 2025.

Apart from Southeast Asia and Europe, Latin America emerged as a rising market, with 87 entries in the 19th Japan International Manga Award. For both the 18th and 19th editions of the award, Brazil won the Gold Award.

In the 19th edition, South Asia’s rising presence is particularly notable, with 29 entries from the region alone. South Asia demonstrated a notable growth trajectory as well, expanding from 11 entries in the 18th edition to 29 in the next cycle. The 19th edition received first-time entries from South Asian countries Afghanistan and Nepal.

The Japan International Manga Award participant growth in South Asia and the overall APAC region aligns with the region’s increasing Japanese media consumption. India is one of the leading anime and manga markets globally, even though the output remains limited.

The 20th edition maintains the award's core diplomatic function while adapting eligibility criteria to address content authenticity concerns in creative industries. Selection results will be announced through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Japan International MANGA Award websites following committee review.
