Highlights

  • Chernobyl director Johan Renck is set to helm Netflix’s Assassin’s Creed live-action series, marking a major step toward production.
  • Roberto Patino and David Wiener lead as showrunners, with early casting including Toby Wallace, Lola Petticrew, Zachary Hart, and Laura Marcus.
  • The series anchors Netflix’s video game adaptation slate under its long-running Ubisoft partnership, expanding the Assassin’s Creed universe beyond games.

Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Assassin’s Creed has taken a decisive step toward production with the appointment of Johan Renck as director. The project was first announced in 2020 as part of a broader partnership between Netflix and French video game developer Ubisoft to develop multiple series based on the Assassin’s Creed IP.

Renck’s involvement is significant given his track record on Chernobyl, which won 10 Primetime Emmy Awards and established him as a director capable of handling complex, high-stakes narratives. Apart from Chernobyl, Renck has previously worked in Breaking Bad, Vikings, The Last Panther, and the like, building a mixed-genre work profile and proven ability for action-noir dramas.

The Assassin’s Creed live-action series has been in development for several years under Ubisoft Film & Television, with Netflix positioning it as the flagship live-action project in a slate that also includes animated adaptations. However, the project remained dormant until the second half of 2025, when Netflix began casting.

The plot of the upcoming project hasn’t been disclosed; however, the production team described it as a story “about the value of human connection,” with a timeless appeal. According to Ubisoft Film & Television head Jason Altman, the partnership is aiming to develop “the next saga in the Assassin’s Creed universe.”

Production Details of Netflix’s Assassin’s Creed Live-Action Series

As a part of the deal signed between Netflix and Ubisoft in 2020, the series will be produced by Ubisoft Film & Television in collaboration with Netflix. From Ubisoft Film & Television, Jason Altman, Danielle Kreinik, Austin Dill, Gerard Guillemot, Genevieve Jones, and Margaret Boykin serve as executive producers.

Emmy-nominated creators Roberto Patino, famed for Westworld and Sons of Anarchy, and David Wiener, known for Halo and Homecoming, are set as creators, showrunners, and executive producers. Patino described the series’ narrative as an existential “human story,” in the backdrop of “power and violence and sex and greed and vengeance.”

Even though the casting is underway, characters haven’t been confirmed. Toby Wallace, known for Euphoria season 3, was announced as the first regular cast member tied to the production, followed by Lola Petticrew (Say Nothing, Tuesday). Then, Zachary Hart (Slow Horses, Black Doves Season 2) and Laura Marcus (Bad Education, Death by Lightning) joined the production.

Boykin emphasized, “We are so excited to work alongside Roberto, David, and our Netflix partners to bring this beloved franchise to series.” While creative leadership and a few cast members are now confirmed, several key production elements remain under wraps. Netflix and Ubisoft have not publicly disclosed a release date, specific setting, or budget.

The advancement of Netflix’s Assassin’s Creed series comes as the franchise itself continues to thrive. Since debuting in 2007, Assassin’s Creed has become one of gaming’s most successful franchises, with more than 230M units sold worldwide and a slate of mainline and spin-off titles keeping the IP culturally relevant.

On the other hand, Netflix already boasts a successful library of game adaptations, including Castlevania, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, and Arcane. With production momentum, a high-profile creative team, and an emerging cast in place, the Netflix production team is now set to create an epic journey with its upcoming Assassin’s Creed live-Action Series.
