French video game publisher Ubisoft Entertainment SA has acquired Amazon Games’ Montreal development team along with its upcoming free-to-play MOBA, March of Giants. The deal announced on Dec 15, 2025, via press release confirms the Montreal development team will join Ubisoft and continue developing the free-to-play title.
The acquisition also marks the return of some senior leadership to Ubisoft. Creative director Xavier Marquis, best known for Rainbow Six Siege, and Senior Production Leader, Alexandre Parizeau, who was also the former Managing Director of Ubisoft Toronto, will rejoin the company with their team. Marquis emphasized, “returning to Ubisoft brings things full circle,” underscoring the history of “meaningful work” at Ubisoft.
March of Giants, first revealed by Amazon Games, had been positioned as a competitive multiplayer project blending MOBA mechanics with large-scale environments. Ubisoft confirmed that the game remains in development, though no revised launch window has been announced. As a part of the deal, Amazon will provide marketing support for the title on Twitch.
Amazon’s Pullback and Ubisoft’s Strategic Rationale
The Amazon Games Montreal team was established in 2021 and became one of the company’s few remaining internal studios after a series of project cancellations and layoffs across Amazon Games. In Oct 2025, Amazon decided to lay off 14K workers, attributing it to “shifting resources to ensure we’re investing in our biggest bets,” which resulted in massive job losses in its San Diego and Irvine studios.
Under the agreement with Ubisoft, the Montreal development team will be a part of an unannounced Creative Team within the French publisher; however, it remains unclear whether anything will remain of the former Amazon Games Montreal after the agreement.
Ubisoft CEO, Yves Guillemot, characterized the acquisition as a targeted investment in talent and long-term multiplayer expertise, rather than a large-scale expansion. In Ubisoft’s official statement, Guillemot emphasized the team’s experience with competitive systems and AAA titles, welcoming both Parizeau and Marquis.
He further added, “the entire team’s ambition, creativity and talent align perfectly with our desire to build bold new experiences for players,” while discussing the potential of March of Giants IP. The closed alpha version of the title, launched in Sep 2025, showed the game’s “real promise,” according to Parizeau. He added, “by joining Ubisoft, we’re uniting behind a shared vision to build March of Giants into one of the next great, enduring MOBAs.”
For Ubisoft, the deal adds both an in-progress multiplayer IP and a seasoned Montreal team at a time when the publisher is recalibrating its portfolio toward fewer, more durable live-service projects. It also arrives as Ubisoft undergoes broader structural changes, including the recent formation of Vantage Studios, a Tencent-backed subsidiary designed to focus on select franchises and long-term development stability.
Amazon’s VP of Audio, Twitch, and Games, Steve Boom, stated, “We’re confident that under Ubisoft’s leadership, the talented developers in Montreal will continue to thrive and create amazing game experiences,” in Monday’s announcement.
