FX Plans Live-Action 'Far Cry' TV Series With Ubisoft

- FX confirms a live-action Far Cry anthology series in partnership with Ubisoft, led by Rob Mac and Noah Hawley.
- The show will take a character-driven anthology approach, mirroring Far Cry’s standalone storytelling for every installation, focusing on psychological tension and moral ambiguity.
- FX positions the series as a major IP revival, following years of dormant activity for the franchise.
Disney subsidiary FX Production, LLC, is officially planning a live-action Far Cry television series in partnership with Ubisoft Entertainment SA. On Nov. 25, Ubisoft announced FX’s latest push into Far Cry IP, marking the first live-action TV adaptation of the publisher’s long-running open-world franchise, leveraging the rising demand for prestige video-game adaptations.
The upcoming project is a joint venture from famed FX producers Rob Mac and Noah Hawley. The President of FX Entertainment, Nick Grad, emphasized, “I have no doubt that they (Mac & Hawley) will tell this story in a way that is original, gripping, and wildly entertaining,” while sharing his vision about the series.
Rob Mac, known for It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and the Emmy-winning Welcome to Wrexham, will co-create the series under his production banner, More Better Productions, while also starring in the series. However, FX and Mac didn't disclose his role. Noah Hawley, famed for Emmy-winning Fargo and Alien: Earth anthologies, will join Mac as executive producer through 26 Keys.
Also joining as executive producers are Emilia Serrano (26 Keys), Jackie Cohn (More Better Productions), Nick Frenkel (3 Arts), Margaret Boykin and Austin Dill (Ubisoft Film & Television), Gerard Guillemot, and John Campisi.
Vision for the Series
First published in 2004, Far Cry remains one of Ubisoft’s most recognizable brands, known for its high-intensity combat and memorable antagonists. The series has reportedly sold roughly 60M units globally and has maintained a standalone narrative structure across entries, a format FX now intends to mirror for television.
FX and Ubisoft are positioning the series as a character-driven, thematic reinterpretation, rather than a direct retelling of any single game. The franchise has a total of six mainline games, and the announcement hasn’t disclosed whether it will be based only on these or include spinoffs as well. However, according to the report, the anthology will feature new cast and setting for every season.
In official statements, Hawley said Far Cry’s structure is “a variation on a theme,” similar to Fargo’s format, and that the anthology model will allow each season to explore “the nature of humanity through this complex and chaotic lens.” His remarks signal a focus on moral ambiguity and psychological tension, rather than a straightforward action adaptation, like his other works.
Franchise Revival Through 'Far Cry' Live-Action Adaptation
Mac described Far Cry as “one of the most iconic video-game worlds ever created,” and emphasized Ubisoft’s willingness to trust the creative team with full reinvention. Grad further explained that the network expects the team to deliver an “original, gripping, and wildly entertaining” interpretation, underscoring FX’s confidence in the franchise’s storytelling potential.
The upcoming series will also mark a shift in the franchise’s momentum; the series has been dormant since its release of Far Cry 6, back in 2021. The previous cross-media collaboration, the Far Cry (2008) movie by Uwe Boll, was commercially weak and faced critical backlash. Even Netflix's animated adaptation, Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix (2023), failed to generate long-term engagement. Therefore, FX’s anthology approach, backed by prestige creators, represents Ubisoft’s conscious effort to revive the Far Cry IP and make it mainstream.
With its foray into video game IP adaptation, FX joins platforms that have achieved similar success. Recent hits such as HBO’s The Last of Us and Amazon’s Fallout have demonstrated the commercial upside of mature, high-budget game adaptations.
According to the announcement, the show will stream on Hulu in the United States, while Disney+ will stream internationally. FX has yet to disclose a budget and premiere timing of the project.
