Why is KPop Demon Hunters Getting a Physical Release?
Netflix has rarely put its films on physical media, although Criterion has previously released titles including The Irishman, Roma, and Marriage Story. The move places KPop Demon Hunters within Criterion's stated mission of being “dedicated to publishing important classic and contemporary films from around the world.”

Released in 2025, the 96-minute, PG action-adventure animation follows HUNTR/X members Rumi, Mira, and Zoey as they balance pop stardom with protecting fans from supernatural forces. Its soundtrack topped Billboard charts, Golden became the first K-pop song to win an Academy Award, and TIME named the film its 2025 Breakthrough of the Year.
The film surpassed Red Notice as Netflix's most-watched movie and also received a theatrical sing-along release. Box Office Mojo lists $24.3M domestically, $308,337 internationally, and $24,608,337 worldwide, from a $100M budget.
Netflix confirmed the sequel in March 2026, with Kang and Appelhans returning. The Criterion edition now bridges the first film's record-setting run with the franchise's next chapter.
