Highlights

  • Netflix has confirmed that Fool Night, the dystopian anime adaptation by Sunrise and SHAFT, will stream exclusively on the platform in 2026.
  • Set in a world devastated by environmental collapse, Fool Night follows Toshiro Kamiya as he undergoes transfloration.
  • The anime features notable production members, including Atsuyuki Yukawa, Jin Tanaka, and composer Tatsuya Katō.

On June 23, Netflix announced that the recently teased new anime from Sunrise and SHAFT, which was revealed to be Fool Night, will exclusively stream on the platform in 2026. The announcement was part of the Netflix Anime: Bold Stories, Boundless Worlds panel at the Annecy Festival, where the streamer unveiled a slate of upcoming anime.

Fool Night anime series adapts Kasumi Yasuda’s manga, which was launched on Shogakukan’s Big Comic Superior in November 2020. Yasuda’s manga series comes with significant industry recognition, following its win as the best suspense manga at the 2023 Japan Expo Awards.

Netflix’s new anime also stands out because it marks a rare collaboration between two of Japan’s prominent animation studios Sunrise and SHAFT. The collaboration duo unveiled an early animation teaser on June 18, announcing the partnership and stating that new information would be announced on June 23.

Netflix’s Fool Night Anime: Plot and Visual Identity

Fool Night is set in a dystopian future where environmental collapse has entrapped Earth in near-permanent winter and night, killing off most vegetation and triggering a severe oxygen shortage. The society has adopted a controversial transfloration method, a process that implants seeds in the dying to turn them into oxygen-producing plant beings for money.

Set in that backdrop, the anime focuses on the journey of Toshiro Kamiya, a broke young man who chooses to undergo the transformation process. Fool Night's central premise blends ecological anxiety, economic inequality, and personal sacrifice to deconstruct the value of human life and identity.

The teaser material emphasizes contrasting color palettes, heavy shadows, and industrial landscapes that reflect economic hierarchy. The ending of the teaser glimpsed a dense forest area with the neon tones of artificial light, the kind a world without sunlight may depend on.

That contrasting world seems like a meeting point for the two studios’ house styles. Fool Night’s visuals align with Sunrise’s well-known science-fiction worlds while also recalling SHAFT’s stylized compositions and unconventional framing techniques.

The Production Team Behind Netflix’s Fool Night Anime

Atsuyuki Yukawa, a unit director in the acclaimed anime film Suzume, directs the Fool Knight anime at Sunrise and SHAFT. The screenplay is written by Jin Tanaka, whose credits include Oshi no Ko and Kowloon Generic Romance.

The anime’s music identity is designed by Dr. Stone’s music composer Tatsuya Katō, who scores the music, and sound director Yōta Tsuruoka, who has previously worked on A Silent Voice. Additional staff includes assistant director Ryō Shimura and art director Maki Takano of J.C. Staff.

Fool Night’s creative team combines veterans from sci-fi, psychological drama, and prestige anime productions. That mix appears consistent with the source material’s blend of philosophical themes and dystopian world-building.

Sunrise x Shaft’s Fool Night anime adaptation was one of several titles in Netflix’s Annecy showcase, which also unveiled details of Wit Studio’s THE ONE PIECE and the feature film THE RIBBON HERO. It also unveiled new visuals of the award-winning Netflix original Blue Eye Samurai’s second season, among others.

Fool Night joins a growing slate of mature anime slate on Netflix, including titles such as Pluto, Orb: On the Movements of the Earth and Ergo Proxy. Unlike many shonen-focused acquisitions, these anime series prioritize complex themes, adult audiences, and distinctive creative voices.
