Highlights

  • Hiro Mashima revives Fairy Tail with a new short-run serialization starting August 2026 in Weekly Shonen Magazine.
  • Kodansha has planned a five-city signing tour and merchandise like Erza Scarlet figurines to boost engagement.
  • The return highlights how legacy shonen IPs leverage anniversaries to re-engage fans and attract new audiences.

Fairy Tail is returning with new manga serialization from August 5, 2026, marking its first serialization since its conclusion in 2017. Kodansha confirmed that the short-run serialization by creator Hiro Mashima will begin in Weekly Shonen Magazine's combined issue 36-37.

The announcement comes as part of the franchise’s 20th anniversary celebrations, which also includes a Special Art Exhibition and an anniversary trailer, featuring the anime series’ first theme song Snow Fairy. Plot details and tenure of the run have not been specified yet.

Fairy Tail is a multimedia franchise spanning manga, anime, and games. Mashima’s original manga started serializing on Weekly Shonen Magazine from August 2006, and by 2020 Fairy Tail manga had more than 70M copies in circulation. Mashima has shown excitement about the upcoming serialization and has acknowledged the readers in his statement attached with the announcement.

The new serialization is positioned as Mashima's formal return to the flagship title, not simply the spinoff universe. Fairy Tail sequel series, Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest, has continued separately in Magazine Pocket and received its own anime adaptation.

Merchandise and Live Events Anchor Fairy Tail 20th Anniversary Celebrations

Fairy Tail’s return reflects sustained engagement of legacy shonen franchises, despite the main storyline ending nine years ago. As a part of the celebration, all 328 Fairy Tail episodes will be streamed from April 11, on Anime Times YouTube channel.

For the 20th anniversary celebrations, Mashima will conduct a signing tour across Japan’s Hokkaido, Osaka, Aichi, Fukuoka, and Tokyo. The application process and venues of the event will be announced via the official anniversary site and Mashima's official X account.

The anniversary celebration will also include an Erza Scarlet figurine, as part of the merchandise rollout. Erza is one of the core members in the manga’s plot and has been widely considered as one of the strongest female characters in manga.

Previously, a Fairy Tail 20th Anniversary Print Exhibition was hosted between March 12 and 27, featuring new artworks by the creator. Combining anniversaries with reactivation initiatives is a common strategy followed in Japan’s manga-anime market.

Toho's Evangelion anniversary campaigns and Bandai Namco's Digimon 25th year revival have demonstrated that concluded shonen IPs with large fanbases can generate substantial licensing and merchandise revenue well past their original serialization cycle. Fairy Tail manga already has a global presence, with it being the fourth best-selling manga in France in 2023.

The initiative will also revitalize the franchise and introduce the classic anime to a new-gen audience. However, caveats remain with the "Short-run" designations; in Weekly Shonen Magazine, short-runs typically range from a few chapters to several months' publication. Whether this functions as a standalone commemorative arc or seeds a longer return will determine the actual scale of the franchise's comeback.
