Anime fans can finally breathe a sigh of relief. Following a brutal three-month hiatus that felt like an eternity, the One Piece anime officially came roaring back on April 5 to launch the highly anticipated Elbaph Arc. Toei Animation didn't just bring the Straw Hats back to our screens, though—they dropped a massive bombshell right out of the gate with brand-new opening and ending sequences that already have the global fandom dissecting every single frame for clues.
Setting the mood for the crew's arrival in the Norse-inspired land of the giants is the anime's 29th opening theme, Luminous, performed by AiNA THE END. Taking the reins from ELLEGARDEN’s Egghead Arc anthem Carmine, this high-energy intro wastes zero time getting into the heavy lore. The new visuals heavily spotlight a cryptic ancient mural carved into what looks like the massive Treasure Tree Adam while also teasing the looming threat of the World Government's elite enforcers, the Holy Knights.
Backing up the explosive new intro is the show's 23rd ending theme, That Future, delivered by the rock band Jisoku 36km. Stepping in to replace PUNKS by CHAMELEON LIME WHOOPIEPIE, this slightly more ominous ending song leans into the darker, snow-covered reality of Elbaph's upper regions. Together, the two sequences serve up an absolute feast of visual Easter eggs regarding Void Century secrets and the looming final war.
Yuichi Nakamura Joins the Voice Cast
As if the visual shake-ups weren't enough to get the hype train moving, the series also added some serious star power to its voice cast for this new saga. Fan-favorite actor Yuichi Nakamura has officially signed on to voice the captive giant prince, Loki. Nakamura is a titan in the industry, best known for his portrayal of the effortlessly cool Satoru Gojo in Jujutsu Kaisen.
Fans have been theorizing about Loki's true motives for years, and having a heavyweight voice actor like Nakamura step into the booth basically guarantees the character is going to play a massive, endgame-level role in the story going forward.
All of this fresh momentum comes at a time when Eiichiro Oda’s legendary series is practically unstoppable. The manga has been running nonstop since July 1997, crossing the mind-boggling milestone of 500 million circulating copies worldwide back in August 2022, right around its 25th anniversary, as per AnimeCorner.
Even outside of the weekly Sunday broadcasts, there is still a ridiculous amount of content on the horizon for the franchise. Netflix has already locked in a confirmed third season for its smash-hit live-action adaptation, while WIT Studio is actively working on a complete, ground-up remake of the original anime. On top of that, the One Piece: Heroines novel, which shifts the focus squarely onto the fan-favorite women of the series, is officially getting its own anime adaptation. It is a remarkably good time to immerse oneself in the Straw Hat legacy.
