  • RRR's success in Japan and worldwide makes it a strong candidate for an anime version, a narrative form that is now globally loved.
  • Influenced by global hits like Demon Slayer and Attack on Titan, Rajamouli sees anime as a serious storytelling style.
  • The project could lead to closer work between Indian films and Japanese animation studios.

S.S. Rajamouli, the renowned Indian filmmaker, is actively working on an RRR anime adaptation as part of a larger attempt to expand narrative formats for Indian stories. The director is currently in conversations with several Japanese anime studios about expanding the universe of his 2022 international smash through animated storytelling.

RRR International Expansion and the Case for a Japan-Led Anime Continuation

Rajamouli's Telugu-first, pan-Indian period action drama RRR broke down the language barrier and quickly became one of India's most successful films worldwide. In Japan, it broke a 24-year record while collecting over ¥2.4 billion (~ $15.32 million USD) and more than 1M admissions (data from Sacnilk). This highlights the prospective popularity of a localized RRR Japan anime version. Furthermore, the film also won an Oscar for their lively dance song Naatu Naatu.

According to industry reports including Polygon, Times of India, and others, the director's interest in anime has risen in recent years as a result of exposure to internationally acclaimed titles such as Demon Slayer and Attack on Titan. The director claims that these anime films inspired his understanding of highly emotional storytelling and narrative subversions.

Market data indicates that conditions are favorable for an SS Rajamouli anime project. According to Research and Markets, the anime market is predicted to reach $93.49B, growing at a 16.43% CAGR, driven by global streaming demand and overseas content collaboration. Japan remains a production hub, with IMARC Group valuing the country's local anime industry at around $1.99B in 2024 while anticipating significant growth over the years.

SS Rajamouli Japan Collaboration Signals a New Phase for Indian Movie Anime Adaptation

If the Indian movie anime adaptation is finalized, it would be a watershed moment for the country’s storytelling formats, while also increasing creative collaboration between Indian cinema and the Japanese animation ecosystem. Noting that Rajamouli's own animated project, Baahubali: The Eternal War, is yet to come out, the pivot highlights how important the SS Rajamouli Japan collaboration is.

While details like studio partners and release timing of the anime project are not made public yet, media reports indicate that he's "waiting for things to move forward" and expects to showcase a "cool continuation of RRR anime." Moving forward, Rajamouli's latest projects include Varanasi, a global-scale live-action film starring Mahesh Babu and Priyanka Chopra Jonas. The film is set to be released in April 2027, highlighting the director’s growing global aim of conquering markets abroad.
