The upcoming anime adaptation of Smoking Behind the Supermarket With You has confirmed its television debut, scheduled for July 9, 2026. Along with the premiere date, the official website also released the second main promotional video featuring the opening track Ichijiku Kemuri (tr. Fig Smoke).
Adapted from Jinushi’s award-winning manga, the anime follows a growing trend of mature slice-of-life stories. Smoking Behind the Supermarket With You manga, serialized in Square Enix's Manga UP! platform, has established its reputation in Japan for its realistic portrayal of adult relationships and everyday life.
It won first place in the Web Manga category at the Next Manga Awards 2022 and placed eighth in the 2023 Manga Taisho award, underscoring its narrative significance. The anime will start broadcasting on TBS and 27 affiliated stations on July 9, 11:56 pm JST, in Japan.

Smoking Behind the Supermarket With You anime follows a 45-year-old office worker, Sasaki, who finds comfort in cigarette breaks and frequent visits to a local supermarket after work. The narrative focuses on Sasaki developing an unlikely friendship with a sharp-tongued stranger named Tayama, unaware that she shares a connection with his favorite cashier, Yamada.
Takuya Satō and Seena Hoshiki join the production in the leading roles of Sasaki and Tayama/Yamada, respectively. Smoking Behind the Supermarket With You anime adaptation is produced by Asahi Production, with Tadato Suzuki and Aoi Mori directing. Both have previously worked together in Gushing Over Magical Girls.
Where to Watch Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You
Crunchyroll will internationally stream Smoking Behind the Supermarket With You TV anime across nine regions, including the Americas, the Middle East, India, and Europe. Netflix and ABEMA will also stream the series from July 10 in selected locations.
Ahead of the July premiere, ABEMA and Crunchyroll began a limited advance streaming on June 3. Crunchyroll has split the first six episodes into 12 mini episodes, each lasting 10 minutes. Every episode is presented in chronological order.
Crunchyroll has also slated the show’s first episode for an early theatrical screening at Anime Expo 2026, running July 2-5 in Los Angeles. The July 9 debut places Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You among a packed Summer 2026 slate that includes returning franchises like Mushoku Tensei season 3 and Saga of Tanya the Evil season 2. Whether its focus on adult characters and realism can sustain engagement following its early screenings remains to be seen.
