  • IOC President Kirsty Coventry assures the Olympic Esports initiative remains alive despite recent suspensions.
  • The strategy is undergoing a "Pause and Reflect" review after the 12-year Saudi Arabia deal collapsed.
  • Esports plans are temporarily on hold as the IOC prioritizes its core "Fit for the Future" agenda.

Just when gamers and fans thought the International Olympic Committee had rage-quit on competitive gaming, the project has officially respawned. Despite the recent suspension of the IOC's Esports Commission, newly elected IOC President Kirsty Coventry has reassured the world that plans for the Olympic Esports Games are “very much alive.” While the initiative isn't dead, the committee has simply hit the pause button to rethink its strategy. The standalone event model initially championed by former President Thomas Bach is being reshaped, proving that the dream of bringing esports under the Olympic rings is still actively in play.

Speaking at a recent press conference, Coventry clarified the current status of the project ahead of the pivotal ‘Extraordinary 146th IOC Session’ scheduled for June 24 and 25. She revealed that esports currently sits directly under her executive office and that she is actively working with industry experts to iron out the details. However, fans shouldn't expect an immediate announcement.

Coventry explained that the committee is currently focusing on its “Fit for the Future” process, which will define the IOC’s broader strategy over the next seven years. Emphasizing a "Pause and Reflect" approach, she noted that the timing just isn't right for an immediate reveal, confirming that an esports presentation will only be brought to the Executive Board after June.

Esports Commission Suspension & the Collapse of the Saudi Deal

This reassurance brings a much-needed sigh of relief to a confused global esports community following a highly turbulent timeline. The statement comes after the suspension of the International Olympic Committee’s Esports Commission earlier in May. This followed the shocking October 2025 collapse of a historic 12-year agreement with Saudi Arabia, which was originally set to host the inaugural Olympic Esports Games.

Disagreements over the inclusion of wildly popular but violent first-person shooters like Call of Duty and Fortnite, combined with the complex logistics of the Saudi partnership, ultimately forced the IOC to step back. These blows left the future of Olympic esports highly uncertain, leading up to Coventry taking the presidential reins in June 2025, as per Insider Gaming.

While the IOC figures out its next move, the organization has outlined nine top-priority working groups for its immediate future. These groups are heavily focused on the committee's core business, dedicating resources to areas like the Olympic Programme, the protection of the female category, commercial partnerships, ethics, the Youth Olympic Games, and the newly established Olympic Q-Series. Because of this massive internal focus, esports has been temporarily moved off the primary agenda, cementing its status as a future goal rather than an immediate priority.

Even though Olympic integration is currently on hold, the stakes are undeniably high, and the IOC understands that it cannot continue to ignore the digital arena. According to market data, the global esports industry was valued at a staggering $2.13 billion USD in 2024. Fueled by a highly engaged demographic of over a billion active gamers worldwide, that market size is projected to skyrocket to $7.46B by 2030, representing a massive 23.1% compound annual growth rate.

The competitive gaming scene continues to thrive independently with massive international, nation-based tournaments, proving that whether the IOC is ready or not, the demand for global esports competition is stronger than ever.
