Highlights

  • The Elder Scrolls VI remains the top priority, with Fallout 5 entering pre-production.
  • Fallout remasters and a new Obsidian spin-off will bridge the gap to future titles.
  • Bethesda is adopting a franchise-centric model amid significant layoffs and union protests.

Bethesda Game Studios has laid out a massive development roadmap that confirms The Elder Scrolls VI remains the studio's primary focus, while Fallout 5 has officially entered pre-production. To bridge the multi-year wait for these flagship sequels, executive producer Todd Howard revealed that full remasters for both Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas are actively in development. In a move that fans have championed for over a decade, Obsidian Entertainment, the celebrated studio behind the 2010 original, is also actively collaborating on a separate, brand-new Fallout spin-off project. While neither mainline sequel is close to release, Bethesda is deploying a massive wave of fantasy and post-apocalyptic projects to keep these legendary worlds alive.

Despite players waiting 15 years since the launch of Skyrim, a monumental release that has surpassed 65 million copies sold worldwide, Bethesda reassured fans that its next fantasy epic is progressing exactly as intended. Howard confirmed that The Elder Scrolls VI is the studio's "primary development focus," noting that the majority of the team is currently dedicated to building the sequel. "The next chapter is on the way," Howard stated. "We’re where we planned to be, loving how it looks, and playing it every day."

While The Elder Scrolls VI commands the bulk of the studio's resources, Howard addressed the next mainline post-apocalyptic RPG by confirming its current status: "Fallout 5 remains our long-range destination.”

To further bolster development, The Elder Scrolls Online creator ZeniMax Online Studios is now partnering directly with Bethesda Game Studios on the mainline fantasy franchise, even as they continue building new content for the MMO.

The Fallout franchise has been elevated to one of the company's highest priorities, propelled by Fallout 4 crossing 35M copies sold and the mainstream triumph of the Amazon Studios television adaptation. Because Fallout 5 has only just moved into pre-production on Creation Engine 3, interim projects are doing the heavy lifting to maintain brand momentum.

While release dates remain under wraps, the confirmed remasters of Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas, alongside Obsidian's mystery project, serve as the vital bridge for the community. The studio is also planning something special for the franchise's 30th anniversary, promising that Fallout Day will be celebrated live in Washington, D.C., in 2027, as per Gamesindustry.biz.

Live-Service Roadmap

Players investing in Bethesda's live-service titles have major content on the horizon. Fallout 76 will receive a major expansion titled "Raven Rock" next year, offering a prequel storyline that ties directly into the events of Fallout 3. Meanwhile, Fallout Shelter has surpassed a staggering 250M players, inspiring an unscripted television project currently in the works with Amazon Studios and Kilter Films, running alongside active production on season three of the main Fallout series.

Starfield is also receiving steady support as it prepares to enter its third year next year, with Bethesda promising targeted gameplay improvements, new Settled Systems stories, and a Starborn-focused expansion.

A central pillar of Bethesda's modern strategy relies on user-generated content and shared infrastructure. Following the expansion of the Creations platform to Fallout 4, joining Skyrim and Starfield, Howard revealed that community creators have already earned more than $10 million USD in royalties from their work.

Franchise-Centric Restructuring Follows 3,200 Xbox Layoffs

This comprehensive transparency arrives during a pivotal and painful transition period for Bethesda and its parent company, Microsoft. According to Bethesda CEO Jill Braff, the company is shifting away from isolated studio timelines toward a franchise-centric planning model that concentrates resources on long-term growth for its strongest intellectual properties.

However, this structural overhaul follows sweeping workforce reductions by Microsoft, which recently cut 3,200 jobs across its entire Xbox division. Bethesda's sister studios under ZeniMax Media, specifically id Software and ZeniMax Online Studios, were hit particularly hard, with the latter losing several leadership positions.

In response to the layoffs, the OneBGS union organized a formal protest representing 440 affected union members across the company. The union issued a defiant public statement rejecting the cuts, declaring that while the company wants them to accept the layoffs as a done deal and quietly disappear, they refuse to let that happen. The union confirmed its immediate next steps are to mobilize, calling for visible and unified action from every single member as Bethesda navigates the future of its biggest franchises.
