Highlights

  • Gearbox Software and Take-Two Interactive's "Borderlands 4" has generated $150 million in revenue from 2.5 million copies sold in its first 10 days.
  • USA, China, Germany, UK, and Canada are the top 5 contributors.

Gearbox Software and Take-Two Interactive's "Borderlands 4" generated $150 million in revenue from 2.5 million copies sold in its first 10 days following its Sept. 12 launch, according to analytics firm Alinea Analytics.

Steam dominated sales with 1.3 million copies sold, accounting for roughly $80 million in revenue, while console versions across PlayStation and Xbox platforms contributed over one million additional sales. The game peaked at more than 300,000 concurrent players on Steam, setting a new franchise record.

Market Strength and Franchise Loyalty

The strong debut underscores the power of franchise loyalty in driving initial sales. According to GamesIndustry.biz, 59% of players had played Borderlands 2 on a PC, and 51% had Borderlands 3 installed. A substantial 22% had interacted with Tiny Tina's Wonderlands, a spin-off of the Borderlands franchise. On PlayStation, overlap is even higher: 81% had played Borderlands 3, and nearly two-thirds had purchased The Handsome Collection.

Western Europe and the United States continue to be the main sources of revenue. Over half of the players are from the USA, while China, Germany, the UK, and Canada hold the next 4 spots for top contributors. The report also states that once price changes and promotions are implemented, the emerging regions, such as Southeast Asia and Latin America, will also gain market share.

Company Response Towards Technical Challenges

The commercial success comes despite widespread technical complaints, particularly from PC users reporting stuttering, crashes, and optimization problems on mid-tier hardware through Steam reviews. Console versions have shown fewer performance issues compared with previous franchise entries, according to user reports.

Gearbox has acknowledged the problems and is releasing patches to address console field-of-view settings, memory leaks, and stability issues. Chief Executive Randy Pitchford said in a social media post that "less than one percent of one percent" of players have filed verified performance complaints after the company worked with affected users.

The launch represents an early win for Take-Two Interactive as the gaming industry faces broader headwinds. However, sustained success will depend on Gearbox's ability to resolve PC performance issues and maintain console stability while expanding into international markets through targeted pricing strategies.

The game marks the franchise's entry into live-service mechanics while retaining core role-playing and shooter elements that have defined the series. Early player engagement suggests the hybrid approach is resonating with the franchise's established fan base, though long-term retention will hinge on technical improvements and content updates.
