CS:GO Growth Continues Months After Standalone Return
Classic Counter-Strike continues to compete with modern Steam hits.
Highlights
- CS:GO hit a new post-return peak of over 68.2K concurrent players on Steam.
- The classic shooter has climbed into Steam's top 30 despite limited discoverability.
- CS:GO now outpaces several modern hits, including Rainbow Six Siege and Battlefield 6.
Counter-Strike 2 (CS2) remains Steam's biggest game, with more than 750K concurrent players and a 24-hour peak of over 1.4M. While Valve's latest shooter continues to dominate the platform, CS: Global Offensive is quietly building momentum of its own.
According to SteamDB, the classic shooter reached a new post-return concurrent player peak of 68,231 on July 2, 2026. It marks the game's highest player count since Valve restored it as a standalone title earlier this year.
The milestone stands out because CS is no longer prominently listed on Steam. Players typically need to search for the game directly or access it through a dedicated link. Despite that extra hurdle, the 2012 shooter continues to attract tens of thousands of players daily, showing that interest extends well beyond its initial relaunch.
CS's Standalone Return Continues to Attract Players
Valve merged CS into CS 2 following the latter's launch in 2023. Earlier in 2026, however, the company restored the original game as a separate release, giving longtime fans the option to return to the legacy version.
The latest SteamDB figures suggest that the decision is paying off.
Instead of declining after the initial wave of returning players, CS's player count has continued to grow. The steady increase indicates that many players still prefer the original game's movement, mechanics, and overall gameplay feel over the changes introduced in CS 2.
Classic CS Still Competes With Modern Hits
At the time of writing, CS has more than 55K concurrent players, placing it among Steam's top 30 most-played games. It currently sits ahead of major releases, including Rainbow Six Siege, Baldur's Gate 3, and Battlefield 6. Its player count is also comparable to Valve's in-development shooter Deadlock, which has around 29K concurrent players despite also lacking a standard public Steam storefront.
The latest numbers reinforce the long-term appeal of the CS franchise. CS 2 remains Steam's dominant competitive shooter, but older entries continue to draw healthy audiences.
Older CS titles, including CS, CS: Source, and CS:GO, continue to maintain healthy player bases. Their longevity, alongside the success of Valorant, highlights the sustained demand for multiple tactical FPS experiences instead of a single dominant game.
