Discord Launches New Age Checks for Teen Safety

Discord has begun introducing an age-assurance system that classifies accounts as adult, teen, or unconfirmed. It also offers multiple ways to verify age when its automated system cannot establish a user's age.

Announced by Discord on Sep 22, 2026, the system is being introduced globally following the company's February 2026 decision to delay its wider age-assurance plans.

Discord CTO and co-founder, Stanislav Vishnevskiy, stated that changing regulations in regions including Texas and Brazil influenced the new approach. He also pointed to calls for stronger teen protections from policymakers in places such as the European Union and Indonesia.

Discord expects more than 90% of users to receive an age group without having to complete a verification check.

How Discord Will Determine User Age

Discord's estimation system examines account-level patterns, including account age, connected communities, servers and games, and general activity. It does not use messages, calls, or other content, and Discord says no individual server can determine a user's classification.

The system is not currently available in the U.K. and Australia.

Users can view their classification under User Settings > Account Status:

• Adult, 18+: No additional restrictions.
• Teen, 13-17: Age-restricted content, spaces, and settings are unavailable, while messaging friends, voice calls, and non-restricted servers remain accessible.
• Unconfirmed: Discord remains usable, but some adult features stay locked until confirmation.

Teen accounts also receive protections for non-friend messages, unfamiliar friend requests, sensitive images, and profile visibility.

Discord has added credit card checks through k-ID and Stripe, Apple App Store and Google Play age-range sharing, video selfies, Google Wallet, ID scans, and AgeKey. The company says verification providers are required to delete submitted data immediately after confirming a user's age, while Discord receives only the necessary age-group signal.

Facial estimation must run on-device.

Discord Faces Mixed Reaction on X

Discord's official X handle noted that it had made “significant changes” to address data-breach concerns. Reactions ranged widely.

@ColRealPro called the system “a perfectly fine solution,” while so many users raised concerns about privacy, data security, or the need for the policy.

Meanwhile, @JayViperTV questioned the effectiveness of age verification, whereas @tallcowyt reported an incorrect age assessment. Some separately described a dispute involving Discord's AI moderation and GIFs from its picker.

Discord acknowledges that its model can make errors. Vishnevskiy wrote that “no model is perfect,” while the company says incorrectly classified users can correct their status through Account Status.

Discord has also retired the manual review process linked to its September 2025 breach. The company has introduced spoiler channels for sensitive discussions without requiring age restrictions across an entire server and will continue reporting age-assurance data through its transparency reports.
