Discord’s Age Checks Put Privacy Under Scrutiny
Global age assurance plans could reshape Discord for teens.
Highlights
- Discord reportedly plans to restore global age verification.
- New age checks could introduce tighter restrictions for teens.
- The move is raising privacy concerns among Discord users.
Discord is reportedly preparing to restore global age verification under the codename “Tiny Bronco,” according to @DiscordPreviews on X. The reported system would introduce tighter restrictions for teens, including limits on adult-only servers and channels, sensitive media, stage channels, and message requests.
The reported restrictions include:
- No access to adult-only servers and channels.
- No speaking on stage channels.
- Blurred sensitive media in servers and DMs.
- Mandatory message requests.
Discord’s Age Assurance Plans Face Privacy and Safety Questions
The development follows Discord’s February decision to delay its global age-assurance rollout until the second half of 2026.
Discord reported that the delay would allow it to expand verification options, improve vendor transparency, and publish technical documentation. The company also noted more than 90% of users would continue without additional verification.
Discord requires users to be confirmed adults to access age-restricted servers, channels, and commands or change certain safety settings. Its content filters cover sexually explicit or suggestive adult media and graphic visual material, but do not scan text messages, voice, or calls.
Privacy remains a major concern among users.
@Seth_Wulfstone described the reported development as “another breach of privacy.” Meanwhile, @B4DZ1V4L said they would rather switch to another app than verify their information.
Discord says facial age estimation runs entirely on a user’s device, IDs are deleted after verification, and the company receives an age result rather than the person’s identity. Its age-inference model uses account behavior and other signals without analyzing message content.
Roblox Takes a Different Approach to Age-Based Safety
On the other hand, Roblox is taking a broader age-segmentation approach as the platform continues to face lawsuits and scrutiny over child safety, privacy, and allegations involving predators targeting minors. The company has introduced three age-based experiences, each designed around a specific age group:
- Roblox Kids: For users ages 5-8.
- Roblox Select: For users ages 9-15.
- Standard Roblox: For users ages 16 and older.
The system combines age checks, content ratings, communication controls, and parental oversight to provide age-appropriate access across the platform.
Roblox has also introduced additional review requirements for games entering age-specific catalogs. This adds another layer of oversight as the company responds to concerns about how children interact with and access content on the platform.
For younger users, Roblox also applies additional review requirements to games entering age-specific catalogs. Together, Discord and Roblox show how gaming platforms are moving toward age-based access to content, communication, and social spaces while facing continued scrutiny over privacy.
