EA Says New Battlefield Game Contains No AI-Generated Content
Statement comes as $55 billion buyout raises questions about automation's role in game development
Highlights
- Battlefield 6 launches on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S with no AI-generated content.
- The announcement comes as EA pursues a $55 billion buyout to go private.
- Investors include Silver Lake, Saudi Arabia’s PIF, and Affinity Partners.
Electronic Arts said its upcoming Battlefield 6 title doesn't include any content generated by artificial intelligence, addressing concerns as the videogame publisher moves forward with a $55 billion leveraged buyout that would take it private.
Rebecka Coutaz, a vice president and general manager overseeing the game's development at EA studios Criterion and DICE, told the BBC that while AI tools were used briefly during early creative exploration, none of that work made it into the final product.
The clarification comes as the Redwood City, Calif.-based company navigates heightened scrutiny over its AI ambitions. The buyout consortium, which includes private-equity firm Silver Lake, Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund and Affinity Partners, the investment firm founded by Jared Kushner, has signaled interest in using AI to streamline operations and manage roughly $20 billion in debt associated with the deal, according to the Financial Times.
Industry Pushback on AI in Game Development
That strategy has fueled unease across the gaming industry. Developers and unions have warned that generative AI could displace workers in writing, voice acting and art design. Earlier this year, the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists secured protections against unlicensed AI-generated performances in videogames.
The new Battlefield release incorporates Nvidia Corp.'s DLSS 4 technology and Reflex features on personal computers, improving frame rates and responsiveness for users of GeForce RTX 50 Series graphics cards. Nvidia said the technology can boost frame rates by as much as 3.8 times under high-performance settings.
EA's twin announcements, ruling out AI-generated assets while pursuing a record-setting buyout, highlight tensions between investor appetite for cost-cutting automation and preserving the human touch in creative work. How the company balances those pressures will test whether major studios can adopt emerging technologies without eroding the craftsmanship that defines their products.
