Egypt has officially blocked the online gaming platform Roblox, with authorities citing concerns that the service promotes content harmful to children. The decision was announced by the Supreme Council for Media Regulation and is being enforced nationwide in coordination with telecom authorities.
Essam al-Amir, vice president (VP) and deputy head of the council, stated a decision had been issued to block Roblox during a Senate session focused on the risks of children’s use of mobile phones and digital applications.
He added the council had recommended action against platforms that promote “deviant behavior or facilitate its spread,” or encourage violence through electronic games. Technical steps to enforce the block are underway with the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority, according to local media reports.
Why Egypt Moved to Block Roblox
The issue was raised in the Senate after Dr. Walaa Hermas Radwan submitted a proposal calling for the regulation of Roblox to protect children’s moral and educational values, reduce psychological and behavioral risks, and organize the operation of online gaming platforms more broadly.
Egypt’s move follows regional restrictions imposed in August and September 2025 by Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Oman over similar child safety concerns. International scrutiny of Roblox has also intensified.
In August 2025, the U.S. state of Louisiana filed a lawsuit accusing the company of facilitating child exploitation, an allegation that Roblox rejected.
A report by Bloomberg said U.S. police had arrested at least 24 individuals since 2018 in cases linked to contacts made through the platform.
Roblox, launched nearly two decades ago, has grown into a major interactive platform, reporting about 151.5M daily active users in 2025 and approximately 380M monthly users worldwide. Recent industry data suggests roughly 39% of its users are under the age of 13.
Egypt’s decision highlights growing regulatory pressure on global gaming platforms as concerns over child safety and online content continue to rise.
