Highlights

  • Epic Games Store to launch iOS and Android self-publishing in August 2026.
  • Google's legal outcome enables fee cuts and third-party store support.
  • Android is expected to drive adoption as iOS faces fee and policy friction.

The Epic Games Store will open mobile self-publishing for iOS and Android in August 2026. The move is part of Epic’s effort to expand beyond PC and build a unified, games-focused marketplace. The plan was outlined by Epic Games Store GM, Steve Allison at GDC, according to PocketGamer.biz. It includes discussions with major publishers that could join later this year.

The rollout follows regulatory shifts reshaping mobile distribution. Epic’s legal battle with Google has led to proposed fee reductions and support for third-party app stores. The changes aim to increase competition and expand developer choice.

Meanwhile, Android reforms are expected to lower barriers for alternative stores like Epic’s, while iOS still faces fees and policy friction.

Epic Games Store Mobile Strategy Builds on Android Reforms

Allison stated Epic has tested demand for a dedicated games marketplace and identified a “cohort of players” interested in the model. He added that Android is likely to drive early adoption, while iOS may see slower uptake due to added costs and restrictions.

The company is also expanding beyond distribution. A cross-platform social framework introduced in January 2026 connects PC, Android, and iOS, adding profiles, messaging, and avatars. These features will be integrated into games through Epic Online Services later this year, alongside a planned voice chat.

Epic’s mobile push builds on its iOS expansion in Europe and global Android rollout, which already hosts hundreds of titles. The shift to open self-publishing marks a move from curated onboarding to a broader developer ecosystem.

With Android policies evolving and publisher talks underway, Epic is positioning its store as an alternative distribution layer. Its success depends on adoption, publisher support, and platform constraints.
