Highlights

  • Capcom is investing $320 million USD to reach 100 million annual sales, driven by Monster Hunter's success.
  • A new Osaka R&D facility will support a development team that has expanded by 30% recently.
  • Monster Hunter Wilds sales momentum slowed after launch due to PC performance issues and pricing.

Japanese gaming giant Capcom is aggressively transforming its operations to chase a massive long-term milestone: selling 100 million game units annually. In a recent interview with Nikkei, Company President Haruhiro Tsujimoto revealed that the publisher aims to nearly double its global software sales, up from the 52 million units sold in the fiscal year ending March 2025. Fuelled by the massive success of franchises like Monster Hunter, Capcom is turning its Osaka facility into a central innovation hub to secure its position in the competitive global market.

The company is backing this ambitious vision with serious capital. For the current fiscal year, Capcom is reportedly investing approximately ¥50 billion ($320 million USD) in development, a figure that has doubled since fiscal 2020. This financial injection is designed to counter the industry’s rising costs and longer production cycles. To mitigate risks, Tsujimoto noted that the company is managing schedules based on strict five-year plans.

Physical expansion is a critical part of this strategy, as the company is rapidly outgrowing its current footprint. Capcom continues to hire approximately 100 new developers annually, bringing its development workforce to 2,846 employees, a 30% increase over the last five years. To house this growing talent pool, the developer recently purchased a 2,300-square-meter plot in Osaka for ¥9B ($57.6M).

Monster Hunter Wilds Sales Slow Amid Performance Issues

This site, located near their current headquarters, will house a third R&D building set for completion in 2027. The strategy is fuelled by the performance of blockbuster franchises, though the road has had recent bumps. Monster Hunter Wilds shattered records by selling 10 million units within its first month following its Feb 2025 release. However, momentum slowed significantly in the following months, with only about 630,000 additional copies sold between April and Sept.

Tsujimoto acknowledged, while talking to Nikkei, that technical issues, such as performance lags and crashes on the PC version, caused players to hesitate. He also cited the game's price point as a friction factor. Capcom plans to address these hurdles through gameplay updates and strategic discount campaigns.

Looking forward, Capcom is focused on maintaining financial stability while exploring new markets. The company has projected a 5% rise in consolidated net profit this fiscal year to ¥51B ($325M), marking a potential ninth consecutive annual record.

With overseas sales now accounting for 84% of total unit sales, the publisher is targeting emerging markets in South America and the Middle East. Beyond established hits like Resident Evil, Capcom is also committed to new intellectual properties, such as the upcoming action-adventure title Pragmata, slated for release in April 2026.
