Highlights

  • New exclusive Ghost of Yotei is a major sales success, adding to a strong software lineup including Helldivers 2.
  • PlayStation 5 hardware sales remain strong, passing 84.2 million units, while the PSN user base grows.
  • Gaming revenue grew, but operating income fell due to one-time charges, while digital sales continued to dominate.

Sony has released its financial results for the second quarter of fiscal year 2025, revealing continued strong momentum for its gaming division. The headline news for players is twofold: the PlayStation 5 console has now shipped over 84.2 million units worldwide as of September 30, and the new exclusive Ghost of Yotei sells 3.3 million copies, cementing it as a major hit. The Ghost of Yotei sales figures are a huge win for Sony. The company confirmed the game sold 3.3 million copies as of November 2, 2025, a massive success despite its premium $69.99 price tag. These impressive Ghost of Yotei first-month sales put the game on a similar successful path as its predecessor, Ghost of Tsushima.  The Ghost of Yotei official sales data confirms strong demand from the massive PS5 player base, and these Ghost of Yotei sales numbers are a testament to the quality of the title.

Hardware Pace and Network Growth

The PS5 hardware itself is maintaining a solid sales pace. Sony shipped 3.9 million units in the last quarter alone, which is a slight increase from the same period last year. This robust performance places the PS5 just behind the PlayStation 4’s record at a similar point in its life cycle.

The entire PlayStation ecosystem is also growing, with PlayStation Network monthly active users reaching 119 million, a three-million increase from the previous year.

Financially, Sony's Game & Network Services (G&NS) segment saw sales revenue climb to ¥1,113.2 billion (approx $7.1 billion) for the July-September quarter, a 3.9% increase year-over-year. However, operating income took a 13.3% dip. Sony attributed this decline to one-time charges linked to Bungie, the developer of Destiny 2, which included around ¥49.8 billion ($2.92 billion) in impairment losses.

Despite the Bungie-related financial impacts, overall software sales were solid. A total of 80.3 million games were sold across PS4 and PS5 in the quarter, with Sony's own first-party titles accounting for 6.3 million units, up from 5.3 million a year earlier. The move to digital continues to dominate, as 72% of all full-game software sales were digital downloads. Add-on content also remained a huge earner, pulling in ¥299.8 billion (approx. $2.21 billion).

It wasn't just Ghost of Yotei performing well. Sony also highlighted ASTRO BOT's solid 1.5 million units sold, while Helldivers 2 continues its massive success with 12 million copies sold. Legacy titles like Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 (10 million) and God of War Ragnarök (15 million) also hit new milestones.

Looking ahead, Sony has revised its full-year sales forecast upward to around  ¥4,470 billion ($32.02 billion), showing strong confidence in the PS5’s momentum.
