God of War TV Show Reportedly Recasting Three Major Roles

Amazon's live-action God of War series is reportedly preparing another round of recasting as it moves beyond its first season. New casting calls suggest Atreus and Thrud will be played by older actors in Season 2, pointing to an adaptation of God of War Ragnarök, where both characters are several years older.

The reported changes come as production also works through the recasting of Kratos following Ryan Hurst's on-set injury.

Amazon Allegedly Seeks Older Actors for Atreus and Thrud

According to MP1st, the production is seeking actors aged 14 to 17 for characters codenamed "Joshua" and "Ruth," widely believed to represent Atreus and Thrud. By comparison, the original Season 1 casting searched for performers between 9 and 12 years old.

Callum Vinson and Island Austin remain set to portray the younger versions of Atreus and Thrud in Season 1, which has not yet premiered and is expected to adapt the events of 2018's God of War. The reported season 2 casting would introduce older versions as the story advances.

The description for Joshua says he had grown up in remoteness in a cabin in the woods before embarking on a journey with his father that changed his understanding of who he is. It adds that season 2 finds him "eager to learn more about the truth of who he is," while his trusting nature leaves him vulnerable to manipulation. The role also requires actors to be comfortable with physical combat, particularly archery.

Ruth is described as intelligent, confident, and sarcastic. She has a strained relationship with her parents but shares a close bond with her grandfather, believing he will one day choose her as heir to the throne.

Kratos' Recasting Reshapes Production Timeline

The speculated season 2 recasts follow a larger production setback involving Kratos.

Ryan Hurst, who was announced for the role in February 2026, tore his bicep while filming a stunt in June 2026 and required surgery. Production was paused before Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios decided to replace him after determining recovery could take up to a year.

Deadline reported that four episodes had already been filmed before the injury. Those episodes will now be reshot with a new Kratos. Production is expected to resume in October 2026 following preparations that begin in August 2026.

If the reported casting plans move forward, Amazon appears set to adapt each game in the Norse saga across separate seasons rather than splitting individual titles into multiple installments.
