Google Play: New Game Trials, AI Sidekick & PC Cross-Buy Tools
Google Play introduces Game Trials for premium titles, a "Buy once, play anywhere" cross-buy model for Android and PC, and Gemini AI support via Play Games Sidekick.
Highlights
- Google Play launches Game Trials, letting users test-drive premium games for up to 60 minutes.
- A new Cross-Buy model allows single purchases to work across both Android and Windows PC.
- Gemini AI powers the new Play Games Sidekick to provide real-time in-game tips and help.
Ever bought a mobile game only to regret it five minutes later? Google is officially stepping in to cure your buyer’s remorse. Announced during the Game Developers Conference, the Google Play Store has introduced a massive new feature called "Game Trials." This update lets you test-drive premium, paid Android games for free before you decide to pull the trigger and purchase them. Designed to bridge the gap between free-to-play titles and traditional console models, it’s a risk-free way to verify device compatibility and see if a game is actually your style.
Finding these trials is incredibly straightforward. Participating titles now feature a prominent "Try" button right on their store listings. Tapping this button launches a time-limited, full version of the game, with developers choosing trial lengths that range from a few minutes to a full hour. Players can dive into the eerie, acclaimed survival horror game Dredge for a full 60 minutes at no cost.
Once your time is up, you get a simple prompt to either buy the full game or delete it from your device. The best part is that you are limited to one trial session per game, but any progress you make is automatically saved. If you do decide to buy, your save file carries over seamlessly, eliminating the frustration of replaying the opening levels.
New PC Cross-Buy
Google isn't keeping these upgrades restricted to your phone, either. The company is actively breaking down the walls between mobile and PC gaming with a new cross-buy unified pricing model. This allows players to purchase a game once on the Play Store and unlock access to both the Android and Windows PC versions, with early supporters including the Reigns franchise, OTTTD, and Dungeon Clawler, as per Engadget.
To back up this expanding ecosystem, Google has launched a dedicated PC section within the Play Store Games tab. This makes it incredibly easy to find desktop-optimized titles, wishlist the ones you want, and receive notifications the moment they get a price drop. While Game Trials are currently live on mobile devices, Google has confirmed that the try-before-you-buy feature will be arriving on Google Play Games for PC in the near future.
To further elevate the premium gaming experience, Google is rolling out its Play Games Sidekick to select paid games. Powered by Gemini AI, this handy in-game overlay provides contextual tips and tools to help you conquer frustrating levels without ever having to leave the app to search the web.

Steam
If you prefer human guidance over an AI assistant, the Play Store is also integrating Community Posts. Available now in English for select titles, this feature gives players a dedicated space to share strategies and ask for advice directly on a game's store page.
This major storefront overhaul arrives at the perfect time, providing a much-needed visibility boost for high-quality paid titles as overall Android game installs continue to double. Looking ahead, Google is putting a major spotlight on premium indie gaming.
Over the coming months, players can expect a wave of highly anticipated titles to hit the platform, including Moonlight Peaks, Sledding Game, and Low-Budget Repairs, all complete with seamless cross-device progress syncing.
