GOG returns to founder ownership as Michał Kiciński acquires the DRM-free platform from CD Projekt
Highlights
- Michał Kiciński acquires full ownership of GOG from CD Projekt in a PLN 90.7 million ($25.2M) deal.
- GOG remains independent, with no changes to user libraries, DRM-free access, or CD Projekt Red releases.
- CD Projekt refocuses on RPG development, while GOG continues its preservation mission and 2026 community plans.
Michał Kiciński, a co-founder of CD Projekt and the original co-founder of GOG, has acquired full ownership of the DRM-free PC game storefront from CD Projekt. The deal, announced on Dec. 29, 2025, transfers 100% of GOG sp. z o.o. to Kiciński for PLN 90.7 million ($25.2M), returning the platform to founder-led independent ownership after more than 17 years within the CD Projekt Group.
CD Projekt said the transaction was fully financed through committed funding secured at closing and does not involve the sale of any of Kiciński’s shares in the publisher.
As part of the agreement, the companies signed a new distribution deal confirming that future CD Projekt Red titles will continue to be released on GOG.
What the GOG Acquisition Means for Players and Preservation
GOG stated it will continue operating independently with no changes to user accounts, libraries, or access to offline installers.
GOG Galaxy will remain optional, and user data will stay with the platform. CD Projekt Red’s existing catalog, including The Witcher and Cyberpunk titles, will also remain available.
Kiciński described the platform’s core identity by stating once that “GOG stands for freedom, independence, and genuine control,” a position the company says underlines its continued focus on DRM-free (dynamic risk management) distribution and long-term game preservation. Funds donated through GOG’s Preservation Program and patron initiatives will remain dedicated to those efforts.
CD Projekt framed the sale as a strategic move to focus fully on developing high-quality RPGs (role-playing games) and expanding entertainment based on its franchises. GOG added that new community initiatives are planned for 2026, alongside expanded preservation work.
The deal sharpens the separation between CD Projekt’s AAA development roadmap and GOG’s role as a DRM-free, preservation-focused storefront in an increasingly locked-down PC games market.
