Monopoly Go! Launches Chat App to Corral $5 Billion Community
Mobile-game publisher Scopely aims to bring players out of Discord and Facebook groups into its own ecosystem
Highlights
- Scopely launched "Monopoly Go! Chat," a standalone messaging app for its hit game.
- The goal is to move player conversations, especially sticker trading, from Discord and Facebook to its own platform.
- This strategy aims to gain direct control over its massive user base and boost player retention.
Scopely has unveiled a dedicated messaging application for its blockbuster mobile game Monopoly Go!, marking an unusual bid by a game publisher to reclaim control of its sprawling player base from third-party platforms.
The new app, Monopoly Go! Chat began rolling out in October in select markets including France and is designed to centralize communication among the game's millions of daily users. For years, players have organized themselves across Discord servers, Facebook groups and Reddit forums to coordinate in-game activities—particularly the trading of digital stickers, a core element of gameplay.
The standalone app represents a significant strategic gamble for Scopely, which is betting it can lure users away from entrenched social platforms and into a walled garden. The app allows players to message friends directly, form groups, participate in community challenges and receive notifications when teammates need assistance.
New Chat App Aims to Overhaul Sticker Trading
The move signals Scopely's determination to own the relationship with its valuable user base rather than cede it to Meta Platforms Inc. or Discord.
The timing reflects Monopoly Go!'s extraordinary commercial success. Since launching in April 2023, the game has logged more than 150 million downloads and generated $5 billion in lifetime revenue as of May 2025, according to industry estimates. More than 10 million people play daily.
The chat app launch comes as mobile-game publishers increasingly seek direct connections with players, bypassing traditional social platforms. Industry executives say owning community infrastructure can boost player retention and create opportunities for targeted engagement.
Scopely, whose portfolio includes Stumble Guys, Star Trek Fleet Command and Marvel Strike Force, acquired Niantic Inc.'s games business—including Pokémon Go and Monster Hunter Now—for $3.5 billion earlier this year. A broader global rollout of the Monopoly Go! Chat app is expected in coming months.
