The Persona 5 series has surpassed 13M sales worldwide, according to Sega’s financial report for Q1 of the fiscal year ending Mar. 31, 2026. The company plans to extend its transmedia strategy to Like a Dragon and Persona, while expanding its Games as a Service (GAAS) business.
The milestone includes Persona 5, Persona 5 Royal, and spin-offs such as Persona 5 Tactica. Persona 5 Royal, released in 2019, sold 1.03M copies in its first year and now totals 7.25M units. Across all titles, the Persona franchise has sold more than 23.5M copies globally. Sega said its growth was driven by higher investment in quality, brand strength, and digital distribution.
Sega Expands GAAS and Transmedia Strategy
Sega reaffirmed its focus on GAAS, emphasizing that strong free-to-play models are key to long-term revenue. Persona 5: The Phantom X, launched in June 2025 for mobile and PC, follows this model with gacha-based microtransactions. Sega president and COO, Shuji Utsumi, noted that expanding GAAS offerings is a “highly important element” of the company’s global strategy.
Sega reported ¥81,026M (around $528M) in net sales, and an operating loss of ¥519M (around $3.38M) for the quarter. Despite the loss, Sega said its approach aims to build a “multi-layered revenue structure” to stabilize earnings.
Following the Sonic the Hedgehog movie franchise’s $1B global box-office success, Sega plans to expand its transmedia reach with Like a Dragon and Persona. New adaptations of OutRun and Shinobi are also in development. Sega said the shift from games inspired by movies to movies based on games reflects the “growing global attention toward game IPs.”
