PlayStation Disc Sales Halved Since PS5 Launch, Now Just 3%
Highlights
- Add-on content, such as DLCs and in-game purchases, contributed 29% of PlayStation’s FY2024 gaming revenue.
- Hardware sales made up 24%, digital software 20%, network services 14%, other sources 10%, and physical software just 3% of annual revenue.
- Analyst Daniel Ahmad notes that the 3% figure for physical is misleading, as it only reflects full revenue from first-party games; Sony records lower royalties for third-party disc sales.
Sony’s newly published Corporate Report 2025 offers a detailed look at how the PlayStation business is evolving in a digital-first world. For FY2024, add-on content emerged as the biggest driver of gaming revenue at 29%, closely followed by hardware sales at 24% and digital software at 20%. Physical games continued their decline, accounting for only 3% of reported revenue, even as more than 73 million copies were still sold worldwide.
This low percentage is mainly due to Sony’s accounting method, which recognizes full value only for first-party disc games and smaller royalties for third-party titles sold in stores. In reality, physical discs represented about 24% of all unit sales, highlighting that while digital dominates in revenue, traditional boxed sales remain a major format for millions of players.
The Shift to Digital Drives PlayStation Growth
The shift toward recurring revenue streams is underscored by the soaring share of add-ons, season passes, and microtransactions. Meanwhile, network services netted 14% of revenue, and Sony’s “other” category (such as peripheral sales) contributed 10%.
These numbers reflect the PlayStation division’s ongoing transition from a product-led business to one centered around live service, digital access, and user engagement. Highlighting its tech ambitions, Sony announced that its secure Enterprise LLM generative AI platform is now in use across 210 groups with more than 50,000 users.
Sony’s latest figures confirm a broader industry shift: while digital and live services dominate the bottom line, physical formats still play a role in the console ecosystem. The company hints at ongoing innovation, leveraging AI not only to enhance productivity internally but also as a future growth driver in PlayStation experiences and entertainment
