- Lempel highlights the extended life cycle of modern consoles and diverse player engagement across big and indie games.
PlayStation Senior Vice President Eric Lempel has recently shared an exciting perspective on the future of the PS5 gaming console during an interview with the BBC. Despite the PS5 already having an impressive lineup of top-selling titles such as Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, and Ghost of Yotei, Lempel confidently stated that the best-selling PS5 game has yet to be released.
This announcement has ignited anticipation among the gaming community, as fans speculate on which upcoming title could claim this prestigious position.
Sony Has Multiple AAA Titles on the Horizon for the PS5
Lempel, who has been with PlayStation for over 25 years and currently oversees marketing, sales, and business operations, emphasized that Sony is "really hitting our stride now" with the PS5. This suggests that while the console has already seen strong success, the best content and sales achievements are still ahead. In a recent interview with the BBC, he refrained from naming the specific game but hinted that it could be a major first-party release or even a high-profile third-party title.
Among the most anticipated games that could fulfill this promise is Marvel’s Wolverine, slated for a fall 2026 release and developed by Insomniac Games, Sony’s renowned first-party studio.
Another strong contender could be the much-anticipated Grand Theft Auto 6 by Rockstar Games, which is expected to launch in late 2026 and has the potential to become one of the biggest entertainment launches in history. Whether Lempel referred to Sony’s own exclusives or blockbuster third-party releases remains a mystery, but the excitement surrounding these titles continues to build.
The longevity of the PS5’s life cycle is also a significant factor in Lempel’s comments. Unlike previous consoles, which typically had shorter cycles of around five years, today’s consoles benefit from technical improvements happening incrementally, alongside an audience increasingly willing to explore a wide variety of game types. Lempel noted that players today engage with 50% more games on average than in previous generations, spanning major hit titles and smaller, unique indie games alike.
Sony’s focus on expanding the PS5 ecosystem, including continuing support for the hardware and enriching its game library, bodes well for the console’s future. With robust sales (over 84M units worldwide) and several exciting releases on the horizon, the PS5’s peak performance in terms of content and commercial success might still be unfolding.
