  • Moore’s Law Is Dead rejected speculation that the PS6 could cost $1.4K.
  • Sony’s digital shift could give it more flexibility to absorb PS6 hardware costs.
  • Shawn Layden says a broader game lineup will be key to justifying higher console prices.

Sony’s move away from physical game discs could give it more flexibility when pricing the PlayStation 6 (PS6). A prominent tech reviewer and hardware leaker, Moore’s Law Is Dead, believes Sony could sell the PS6 as a loss leader instead of passing its full production cost to consumers.

The leaker rejected speculation about a $1.4K USD console. Responding to a discussion on X on July 16, 2026, he stated, “It will not cost $1400.” Meanwhile, some reports have placed the PS6 bill of materials near $1K.

Sony, however, has not confirmed the console’s specifications, manufacturing cost, price, or release date. Reports have pointed to a potential launch in 2027 or 2028.

Moore’s Law Is Dead argues that rising RAM and storage prices do not affect every component equally. He pointed to AMD GPUs costing less than Nvidia GeForce alternatives. He also credited Sony’s supply chain management and console design. The leaker cited the PS5 costing less than Microsoft’s Xbox Series X and Valve’s $1K Steam Machine as examples.

PS6 Price Will Also Depend on Sony’s Software Strategy

Removing a built-in disc drive could further reduce manufacturing costs. Sony plans to end physical discs for new PlayStation game releases in 2028. A stronger shift toward digital game sales could also give the company more room to absorb losses on console hardware.

The question is whether those savings could put the PS6 below the PS5 Pro or simply offset rising component costs.

Former president and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment America, Shawn Layden, raised another challenge for increasingly expensive consoles in an interview with Kotaku. He questioned whether technical improvements such as better ray tracing and 120 FPS would be enough to justify a potential $1K price.

Layden called for “more games for more people,” arguing that the industry risks limiting its reach by repeatedly targeting existing audiences. He acknowledged that Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA VI) will have a major impact but noted that many people remain uninterested in the franchise. He made a similar point about established series such as Gran Turismo and Call of Duty.

Layden also called for greater creative and geographic diversity in game development, citing countries such as Uruguay and Bulgaria as potential sources of varied experiences. For Sony, controlling PS6 hardware costs could address only part of the challenge.

The company will also need a software lineup capable of convincing a wider audience that its next console is worth the investment.
